Studying in St Andrews

I'm interested in studying in london, but I have recently seen the St Andrews course, 3 years in St andrews, and then the clinical years in manchester

St andrews is a very good university, and manchester is highly reputable for medicine, but what is St andrews like as a place to study? does anyone have any photos of the town centre itself? What is off putting is how far north it is, and how there seems to be a lack of pictures on google

any advice on st andrews?

Thanks

Beautiful, amazing.

Lol, I'm from further south than London and I never had a problem with going north. Many students are from down south.

It has some of the better weather in Scotland.

Lack of pictures? Eh?

Really you should go and visit. I think it's an incredible place but some people might get cabin fever. It's stunningly beautiful though.

some non-specific medical applications advice:
- grades: make sure you get what's needed (if unsure, contact the uni to check)
- work experience: get some so you know what medicine is about and that you actually want to do it (work experience makes up a good part of the personal statement)
- personal statement: there's advice on how to write this and what to include in the link in my signature (it's a link to the wiki)

How does the UKCAT score affect your acceptance?
Or SATS?

some universities will use it quite heavily, others not. each ukcat university will use it in a different way. i think for st. andrew's the ukcat is given 4% weighting of the whole application so they aren't as strict as others.

oops, forgot about the UKCAT! UKCAT has had a big effect everywhere this year - some uni's have a cut off point (so no-one who scored below a certain amount will get interviewed), while others only use it if there are too otherwise identical candidates. A lot of otherwise good candidates haven't got very far as a result of UKCAT

It's worth having a look at some UKCAT papers and getting some practise in

SATs? You'd be better off asking the unis directly on that - i don't know

Thanks so much guys! Even though you kinda said the opposite thing, but I get the gist.
Do well. Haha.
I am planning to get the new UKCAT book that comes out April 1st to study because I heard I can only take it once.

How long does it normally take to get response from the admission tutors? From the US?
I plan to complete my application and take the UKCAT over the summer so that I can apply very early (probably end of September, beginning of October). What do you think?

the deadline for applications is 15th October (they open at the start of September), then you can start hearing about interviews anywhere from October to March/April. In theory applying earlier doesn't give you any advantage, but some medical schools do start looking at applications before the deadline, and some people have received interview invitations before the deadline this year.

St. Andrew's is the complete opposite to London.

Oh, thanks! I did not know applications were due that early!! (but is that only for UK applicants?)
I'm from the US, so we don't have to participate in any interview.

the deadline is 15th Oct for ALL med admissions (including international)

and a lot of places do still interview internationals (UEA sends a couple of interviewers out to various countries, but other unis insist on the applicant flying over)

'Fraid you do. Some universities send a panel out to a selection of countries, but a lot of them expect you to come here.

Its nice, can't fault it really.

I have my own gripes with the course, I don't think its as traditional as they sold it to be, but aside from that you can't fault it in my book.

St andrews is fantastic,

Its not actually that far north, I'm from salisbury (read southampton), and I would say the weather here is generally nicer.

Cabin fever doesn't look like it could become a problem, but then I'm not a big city chap really.

Its very pretty, and all in all fits the bill perfectly for me.

Hogwarts on sea is how my father describes it.

..everyone I know that applied from the US and got in didn't do an interview.

And the people who I'm studying alongside now were interviewed. Same goes for the other two universities I was interviewed at, they also required international students to attend an interview.

i don't know whether St Andrews interviews international applicants but i know UEA does - at the moment, they have interviewers visiting some countries to hold interviews there but other times, the applicant has to fly over. I think this is similar for a lot of med schools

e.g. from Aberdeen's medicine website: We expect all overseas candidates to attend for interview.

another med school: No offers are made without an interview
And you can add Manchester, Peninsula and Newcastle to the list that interview internationals too.
most of my US/int friends were not interviewed
