Hey guys I'm a current first year, hopefully offers come in soon but in the meantime (and obviously when people get offers) I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about the course here, accommodation and more general LSE stuff too. Best of luck!!
Hi! I’ve just received an offer to study PPE at LSE 😊😊 I was wondering whether you actually enjoy it in terms of student life as I’ve heard lots about it being overly competitive/ not easy to socialise? Also wondering about the PPE work load and sports, and what you think of the subjects individually? thanks!!

Hey! First of all, huge congrats! It’s really competitive and you’ve done amazing!

I have actually really enjoyed my first year experience so far. In terms of socialising, I’ve had a great time - I think staying at Bankside helped with this, however you can also form more tight knit friendships earlier on at some of the smaller halls. However in terms of going on nights out and such, LSE is definitely a great place to do that (despite the fact it is expensive).

Yes, the stereotype of it being overly competitive is kind of true, however as PPE students we experience far less of it because we can’t apply to springs in first year in any case because of the 4 year degree!

The workload is high, have a look at what I said in the previous message I sent.

To be honest, I really didn’t like the micro module, I thought it was poorly taught, fairly boring and the exam was very hard lol. The maths module I do has a terribly boring lecturer but it’s still quite good and interesting. Philosophy is very fun, well taught and interesting with a good workload - same for politics, although I personally prefer theory to science and we only do that in second year.

Once again, congrats on your offer!

Hi everyone! I have applied to LSE for PPE and was just trying to get an idea of who else has applied, what subjects you're taking at A-level and predicted grades, and finally, why LSE?
Hii! I just received an offer for PPE this evening, the offer is standard with A* in maths

Hi I've also received my LSE PPE offer today, I was wondering if the 4 year programme concerned you in terms of the cost as I may struggle in terms of finances. Also do you know anyone who's managed to switch courses? E.g to politics and econ?

I didn’t realise it’s a four year program 😭

That's probably their main selling point because you do all three of PPE equally throughout all the years
How many 'batches' of offers do you think will be sent out for ppe? Considering there are around 60 places. And how many offers do you think have been sent out so far?
Hi! I'm applying to PPE next year and was wondering what sorts of things you guys did for personal statements?
Congrats on all the offers!

Hi! LSE have a page about things they look for in a PS which I used when writing mine. As you have to do all 3 subjects for the first 3 years I'd say try and talk about each subject the same amount, and also find links between them where you can. I wrote mine more like an academic essay sticking to one topical interest, and analysing my views on it and how the books I've read / lectures I attended changed my perspective on it. Best of luck!

Hey. I’ll answer your questions 1 by 1.
1) Workload is high. It’s one of the top universities in the world so it’s kinda what you’re signing up for. I don’t really have a comparison to PPE courses at other unis, but you do have to put in a lot of work for each module each week (otherwise you suffer eventually haha, saying this from experience). The workload is not higher than that of other courses, my friends in pure econ and law have had to study a lot more than I for example; you still do 4 modules over the year and the modules themselves are shared with other courses, so IMO workload is definitely not higher than other courses in the uni in general.
2) Study is mainly independent. I really don’t think the econ modules in particular have good lectures which is ironic lol, and in classes material is not really explained in too much depth and you simply go through the problem sets or reading/lectures. It’s really on you to understand the material yourself, and if you have issues you need to book an office hour to discuss with your class teacher outside of class and lectures.
3) The LSE philosophy department is very unique in that it is very much science focused; a lot of the professors have science backgrounds and have now shifted to philosophy. We were told by the head of the department that, for example, Kings is superior for ancient philosophy, and I’m sure UCL is better for better aspects. I don’t really agree with the notion that more “applied” philosophy is better (in the sense that it’s science based or whatever), however the department is extremely research focused and dynamic, so it’s really great. However have a look at the philosophy modules at say UCL or KCL and see if they interest you more.
4) Most students like the course but there are complaints about particular modules and such, to be honest it’s just hard being a first year and adjusting to uni in general and there are many things on your priority list other than academics so opinions will change I’m sure. I can’t say much about PPE students at other unis. I personally really like the 4 year structure for various reasons, particularly as the 4th year modules are unique to PPE and are more applied, almost like a placement and dissertation, and I’m considering a year abroad anyways so I would have probably ended up with a 4 year degree in any case.
5) I did FM - I took the harder maths module - first term was great, and now it’s no longer relevant we’re way beyond it haha, so I wouldn’t worry, you could always pick the lighter maths module.
Hope that helps.
Thank you, this was really helpful! Could i ask what the harder maths module was called (I thought all options were the same difficulty lol) And would doing a harder maths module be advantageous to employers/would they care if you were trying to go into a more quantitative or finance role? Thanks!
