i'm not bothered by the choice of college to be fair - it just seemed wierd that i returned the form ages before the deadline (about a day after i got it) and they totally ignored me. I think it will be great in boland though :yep:
does anyone know if the beds are normal size in boland standard rooms (so i can use fitted sheets) + is there underbed storage in those rooms (or a space under the bed big enough to shove a suitcase)?
sorry for being a pain but these rooms weren't open on the open day so i'm not sure exactly what to expect. thanks in advance.

Yes, Bowland beds are a normal size, so fitted sheets are fine. And whilst there is no underbed storage, apart from a few rooms in main, there is plenty of empty space under the bed. It's where I keep my suitcases and stuff.

all the colledges have it,

It pays for all the freshers week stuff that your college does for you, as well as many and various other things... it pays for all the 'free' college stuff you get/do over your time at the uni, you only have to pay it once, it keeps them happy :P

i believe its there as that the colleges dont get that much in the way of core funding from the uni...

Ok thank you

Isnt it a bit odd that you HAVE to join a college.
Im not attacking the system, its just curiosity really.

its tradition.. :P

its also a great way of meeting people in freshers week, aswell as dividing up the student body...

and if you were not in a college you would be.. well not at lancaster :P

even staff memebers are in colleges technically...
They could've informed us about that earlier. 30 pounds is not that little.

you used to have to pay ~£70 for internet access when it was opt in... [ie you did not automatically get internet access in your room]
caused alot of problems and generally a mess due to servers updating overnight..
thats now changed and its included in your rent now..

why they dont do that with the colledge fee i dont know, just add ~£0.75 a week and problem solved... no ones the wiser and it removes hidden fee's

I guess maybe because not everyone lives on campus and yet everyone is part of a college?

I remember being a bit annoyed as it all adds up [especially with the £190 deposit] but at least the £30 is a one off payment I suppose.

Yes, I was a bit surprised by the £30 membership fee, as I think I've read everything I can about the uni, and I haven't read that before :o:

The initial outlay is certainly very pricey, and it does all add up what with the accommodation deposit, Purple Card (and NUS Card if you opt for it), and now this membership fee. Plus there's all the kitchen things to buy or other bits and bobs, and maybe printer/ink if you so wish, and then when you get there, there's small prices for the societies and then the sports passes!

But positive thinking...
- The deposit covers the whole year, and then you should get it back, and if you keep it all tidy and lovely, you should get most of it back.
- For the Purple Card, if you opt for the 3 year option now, then it's a pricey one off payment at the moment, but in a years time, you won't have to pay it again  It's only £10 over 3 years, which is a good deal when you think about it ^^
- The Membership fee again is covered over 3 years, and if it means we can enjoy all the activities for Freshers Week then that's very important too!
- Once you've bought all the bits and bobs for this year at uni, you should, if you look after them, still have them for the next 2 years of uni life so won't have to buy them again!

I just keep thinking of that as I see all of the money come out of my bank :p:

Ouch! I didn't have to pay out for my mail key or for a freshers pack but our welcome dinner was more expensive. I remember being shocked - it is hard to find so much before the loan comes through...

I got an e-mail from Lonsdale with the welcome information and it said;

For extra security external mail is placed in locked mailboxes in the porters' lodge to await collection. Each resident student is required to obtain a mailbox key from the College Administrator. Unfortunately we have to charge a £10 deposit for the key, but this is refunded on safe return of the key at the end of your stay in the college. If you are resident off-campus, you will not need a mailbox key as all your post will be sent to your home address, but you can obtain a key for a locker in the off-campus kitchen - please see Juli, the College Administrator regarding this.

I'm assuming this applies to all colleges.

Also, a question about the freshers pack, it says it has tickets to LOCO? Qu'est-ce que LOCO?

All mail is kept in locked boxes organised by surname I think so everyone on campus needs a key to access them. However, Furness last year did not charge for the key - we were given it along with our room keys - and they have not mentioned charging for it this year. So, the deposit may be a Lonsdale-only thing decided upon by the college.

Never heard of Loco sorry.

I'd imagine all colleges have some sort of pre arrival pack as they run their own programmes during Freshers Week - with socials and so on differing from college to college. The pre-arrival pack will probably also contain information regarding the formal [or welcome dinner] that will take place in the first few weeks of term.

It might be a case of them not sending them out yet or they could be delayed in the post. This Facebook group might be able to help - they have the details of Freshers Week listed on the main page: Bowland Freshers 2009.
on county JCR website it says that LOCO is a 'rave' on tuesday night? :s-smilie:

thats probably a bit of an ott description..

where are you finding this info btw?
i see nothing listed on http://county.lusu.co.uk/freshers/freshers-week-calendar/
I'm pretty sure that LOCO is a Lonsdale JCR Freshers Week social, something about the beach, or it being haiwen-themed I can't really remember.

Each College will be doing Freshers Week their own way, so whilst some Colleges like Lonsdale are charging £10 for their Freshers Packs which include stuff like a white t-shirt and marker pens (for one of their Freshers Week socials) others will have their own events and own system in place. I imagine though that every College will be making a Fresher Pack - Cartmel definitely is.

Oh, and Cartmel will not be doing the formal dinner, but something slightly different - basically a huge casino royale themed party instead (what?! the "boring" college ditching formality for partying?! :P)

Griezedale did that last year and also did the formal dinner. Old news i'm afraid. Let me guess it'll be at Revs? Cartmel may need to look at where they get there ideas from. :p:
