Kingston or Chelsea...?

Whilst I have had my heart set on Chelsea for about 2 1/2 years I am now beginning to wonder. I thought that the best way to do it would be to weight up the pro's and cons so let me know what you think. BTW have already been given an unconditional at Kingston and am awaiting a reply from Chelsea.

Chelsea
- I have met a few of the teachers.
- It has beautiful grounds and the Tate's next door.
- Has a more diverse range of pupils so I can mix with who I want.
- I have done courses there so I am already familiar with it.
- I can specialise straight away (a pro because I know I want to be a designer of some sort).
- Feel I belong there unlike other places in UAL.

Cons
- It's near a bridge that I will have to cross everyday (I have a phobia of throwing my possessions and then myself into the river) weird I know.
- Large class sizes = not enough tutors to go a round?
- May not have enough space.
- May not have enough resources.

Kingston
- Smaller class sizes = more direction and help from tutors (not sure if i want that though)
- More space:tongue:
- Made to work harder

Cons
- Don't like the Head of Foundation (annoying)
- Wasn't inspired by the open day except for the BA product design.
- Also next to a bridge - although smaller.

They are both pretty much equal distances from where I live (Wandsworth/Wimbz) but in different directions. about 40 mins each.

If you can think of more feel free to add thanks

Hey, well done on getting into Kingston ! I got in too!

By what you've said, you obviously prefer chelsea! I think the building is really nice, reputation is great and location is also great. I think one advantage of Kingston is they would probably make you churn out the work!! Which is a great thing - but if you work hard regardless then Chelsea would be fine I'm sure.

Kingston is quite a nice area though, a lot is at your doorstep, but will you be spending a lot of time in the town there? I'm not so familiar with the area around Chelsea - apart from it's near the Tate!

Good luck with everything

yeah the reason i didnt apply to kingston was because of the annoying head and how bad the building looked (reminded me a prison :s-smilie:), which is strange because i applied to csm (but the indoors of the building is somehow really likeable) plus the foundation director there was so good not pretentious at all.

I reallly like chelsea aswell but the class sizes there were huge, it seeemed bigger than csm's when i went on the open days.

Do you plan to go there or elsewhere, if so then why?
Chelsea is like basically the city, which I don't mind obviously - but its fairly quiet.

I don't remember the building looking that bad :s-smilie: . Oh dear. The CSM building is so confusing although I prefer the Southampton Row one to the foundation building. The foundation director at Chelsea is safe. O ok I guess I do want to go to Chelsea.

No probs  I plan to go to the Glasgow School of Art pretty much, I loved it there (and the course is four years up in Scotland) so as I'm pretty much decided on product design - since GCSE - I think it's the right choice. I was going to apply for Chelsea, but didn't in the end because I got an offer from Glasgow, but I think I would have preferred it there than Kingston really.

The building didn't look that bad! but it didn't look the best at all! Not historic, modern, or that pleasant. And yeah, I think you want to go to Chelsea really! But both are brilliant really

Thanks, woah Glasgow is SUCH a big deal -what if you don't like it - would you be able to go elsewhere and isn't it like 4 hours away?
Product Design - good choice - i was consdering that until I did a course on it at CSM and now I'm put off for life. lol.
Yeah its true either one is decent. I know someone who recently graduated from Glasgow actually, she did fine art and she absolutely loved it. Good Luck.

Yeah! it is far! But I do want to move away for university really and everyone I have spoken to has said I'd love Glasgow! I love traveling and on the course they have very good exchange links. I think I will like the course, and the subject itself is central to all the areas I like, so I could always do a masters in something else, or switch (worse case scenario!) I've heard it has happened before at places. Graphic Design is the only other area I would possibly do but I don't enjoy it as much and I'm not as good as other people. How come you were put off by Product Design?

Good to hear she loved it! What are your plans for the future?

I don't really remember why - i think it wasn't free enough for me. At the moment my hearts saying fashion but my heads saying graphics. Erm I want to do fashion I think I have the ideas but I don't have that competitive drive and so I'll probably choose graphics since it seems the most open and varied. If I do graphics I'll probably apply for Chelsea's BA but if its Fashion then CSM because it would make things a lot easier.

Ah okie cool. I think Glasgow is perhaps the most open course for Product Design, with Central Saint Martins being quite close - from my first impressions, it will do for me! And oo sounds good, I wouldn't rule fashion out though! just do what you enjoy the most and then it will come naturally! Good luck!
