Probably not any help at all as i don't know about Italy, but i remember having to pay roughly £5 for supplements on trains in France, such as east to west journeys, not short ones.

Pretty much EVERY train in Italy has a supplement. Only national non-privatised trains are free on interrail and they go about every other day - rubbish. We spent about E50 each on supplements over 3 days in Italy. My advice - either don't travel around, or don't go.

You know, we stayed in Italy for ages and barely had problems on the trains. Maybe we were just lucky. The one time someone tried to charge us we charmed her into letting us stay on without charge until we could get to a station which had a free train going where we wanted to go. Good old Marietta.. if I've remembered her name correctly.
