Of course, what subject have you received your offer for? It should be a food day, would you like me to tell you about it on here?

Thank you in advance.
I hold an offer fot Genetics with an year in industry. I do want to visit York but as EU student it will cost too much.
You can pm me if it's not a problem. But I don't mind to tell about it on here. Wherever you choose, I'll be happy with it

Me!
Obviously I can't ask about the course because we're doing very different degrees, but how are you liking the university and the town? Are you enjoying yourself? Can you tell me a bit about the city and the nightlife, etc?
And also, if my interview goes well, where would you recommend I apply for accommodation? Which are the best halls? Thanks so much for offering to answer some questions!

What's Vanbrugh like as far as accomodation goes? Is is sociable etc?

I'm in New Vanbrugh with Jamie (studying politics) and the nightlife is really good. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday all have specific student nights (though I think Monday isn't official anymore) and there are loads of smaller clubs too. Lots of really nice bars in the centre and hundreds of pubs dotted around. The city is very pretty, cobbled streets and loads of independent shops and cafes as well as all the chains. The city is amount a 20/25 minute walk from the main campus but there are buses (£1.50 single, £2 return) that go from campus.

As far as accomodation goes, Vanbrugh and Derwent are known as being the most sociable I believe but even if you are stuck with people who don't go out all the time I'm sure you'd be able to find others via societies or your course. Alcuin is known for being better for quiet types and Goodricke has its own campus (shortly to be joined by Langwith) which is a good walk away from the main campus (quick on bike though and free bus between the two) and Halifax is a little far out from the main campus. Depends on how much you can afford, obviously Band 4 is the nicest with ensuite. I've heard from people in Goodricke that New Vanbrugh rooms are larger. Having seen kitchens in Derwent and Langwith the kitchens really are impressively better in the Band 4 accomodation but I'm sure if you lived there you'd be fine. Depends what you are looking for really

Anything else I can help you with feel free to message me

You too:-) I've applied for sociology and sociology with criminology

Wow that seems like an interesting course. I have a few friends who do Sociology at college and it looks really good

Have fun at the open day.

Hello  Can I just ask if you have got an offer from York? We have the same predicted grades and I haven't come across anyone who has AAB predicted and received an offer from them, though you do have two sciences and I do not! I hope that your application is doing well

No, Im still waiting on it, but becouse im part of an access to learning scheme, they should lower the grade requirements for me . Hows your application going?

Oh, what's an access to learning scheme?
Well good luck!
Mine is going ok, I have got 3 offers and 1 rejection and now just waiting on York. What about you?
I got an offer to study English at York and I'm planning on going to the Open Day next week. I was just wondering if there were any current students that could tell me a bit about the different colleges and their accommodation? I would like to have a quick look at one or two colleges since I'm there and I'm not quite sure which to choose.
Basically, I'm a fairly quiet person. I like to socialise but I do also like to be able to have some me-time  So a room where I could study without having to go to the library all the time would be great  Which are the quieter colleges and the more buzzing ones? Do you tend to socialise within your own college, in the JCR bar? And is there a bar for every college?
Also, I'd prefer to live in a more modern block as I've heard that Langwith and Derwent are pretty old. Is there any truth in that? :P I'm not sure if I can afford en-suite. If I can, is it worth it? Like how many showers are there per floor?
I think I'm going to go catered but if I do choose so, am I obliged to attend every breakfast/dinner meal? Or is it a card system where you pay a certain amount and then you choose when you go, etc.
Sorry for all the questions but I would really appreciate any of your help! Cheers

Alcuin is supposedly very quiet, but it's also pricier than most. Langwith and Derwent are old, along with parts of Vanbrugh (Eric Milner and Wentworth E definitely) - on the website it'll tell you when the accommodation was built. As far as I know, Langwith is moving to Hes East next year though, so the current Langwith will become Derwent (if that makes sense).

Both Halifax and the older parts of Vanbrugh seem to me to be the noisiest, though I know nothing of James.

Most colleges have bars of some sort - Langwith's is pretty popular, Vanbrugh's is pretty rubbish. The others I'd guess are somewhere in between, though I haven't spent much time in them. I don't know if Alcuin or Goodricke have a bar, though. Most people I know don't restrict themselves to their 'own' bar, they just go wherever they feel like (all this said, I don't spend much time at all in the campus bars, so someone else will probably be able to give you better information).

I currently have an ensuite and it's just really nice to have the convenience, and if you can afford it and don't feel like you'd be wasting money then I'd definitely go for it. That said, I've heard that shared bathrooms aren't a problem, and I think they're cleaned daily (or at least very frequently). Showers per floor/people per shower ratio depends on which college you're looking at, the website will help you with that. As for noise, ear plugs are a fantastic investment  I live in New Vanbrugh and for the most part I don't think it's too noisey to be able to work - it's often the loudest when I have essay deadlines :nothing: (though I think the library opening hours are changing to 24/7 next year, so if all else fails you can just stay there )

I know very little about catered accommodation - this page might be of use to you, it states that if you miss a meal you're not entitled to a refund, so I guess you're supposed to turn up to all of them if you want feeding.

Thanks for the insight!
I'm currently debating between Alcuin, Goodricke and James. Apparently Alcuin has "quiet areas", so I'm guessing it's probably one of the least buzzing colleges, then?
It's good to hear that most of the colleges have their own bars though. If you're feeling lazy and don't feeling like walking into York for a night-out, that's a good way to spend an evening  Gosh, I'm not painting a very good picture of myself. Socially quiet and lazy. Oh dear.
En-suite does sound reeeeally appealing, but I guess it depends on the price of the college I'm applying to. And if Alcuin is a tad pricier.. Do you know anything of Goodricke college? I see it's been recently renovated and looks lovely.
Cheers for the link, it's answered most of my questions about catered eating.
I finally got an offer from York, huzzah! AAB to study Biology. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be my firm. I'm hopefully gonna go on a visit day there soon.

I haven't even started deciding about colleges or accomidation or anything. D-: I should probably start having a look...

I only know a few people who live in Alcuin personally, but it does seem quieter than most yeah (and I think because it has that reputation it tends to attract quieter people).

Oh, I only meant Alcuin was pricier in comparison to the others that you had mentioned - all ensuite rooms are similarly expensive, have a look here (and I'm fairly certain that Band 2C ensuites are only available to people with disabilites and if you don't know already, Goodricke and Alcuin only have Band 3&4 rooms).

I only know of Goodricke from pictures (I've never actually been to Hes East), but it does seem really nice. The main complaints seem to be lack of facilities - no cashpoint and no shops being the biggest ones. In terms of convenience, those that I know that live in Goodricke this year find it kind of annoying to have to get to the main campus for all their Englishy things, but if Langwith moves to Hes East next year then I suppose that will change slightly.
Don't suppose anyone's got an offer for English Lit and History (QV31)?

I've tried to be level-headed about it, thinking "oh, all these people getting so stressed because they haven't got replies, ha, such silly people". Sent my application on 10th October and I'm beginning to get a bit antsy. York will more than likely be my firm if I get an offer.

Well I'm waiting on straight History, UCAS sent on the 28th of September and still waiting!

Ouch! Fellow early-applier-late-receiver. It's quite frustrating.

Where else did you apply?

Oxford, KCL (both rejections, I'm taking a resit post A2 to go from A*AB to A*AA which is part of the reason for both of those), Exeter (offer late November) and Warwick (offer a few weeks ago).

So I've waits for most of my Unis, and then I see people on TSR complaining that they applied two weeks ago and they haven't heard and should they be worried

Yeah that annoyed me. Posting on January 20th: "I applied on January 7th, and they still haven't got back to me!"
So I suppose yours will be unconditionals then? Which one would you like best to accept?

No mine are all Conditionals (basically they all want me to get an A in my resit) and I'm not sure where I'll choose yet.

I really like the look of York but the course at Exeter is in my opinion better and it's a lovely place, if York gave me an offer I'd visit it and the decide between the two.

Warwick's course I really don't like and the place itself doesn't appeal to be so I don't think I'd choose them.
Applied end of October, not heard anything yet for Maths, got offers from all 4 other choices a while ago. Not holding my breath for York.

Hi!
I also applied for English Lit and History and got a conditional offer just after Christmas. I'm still waiting for THREE other universities though. When I saw your post I thought I'd just let you know but I really don't think it means anything.
I see no reason why they'd let rejections know later than offers or vice versa so I suppose no one really knows for sure until they know for sure. I'm an Irish applicant so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Is anyone else still waiting for Psychology? They emailed me today to say I was still being considered but I'm getting so annoyed, they're the last one that I'm waiting for =/

I'm going to the applicant day  I'm not a sociology applicant but I think its it the same college - Langwith?? I want to do education with some modules in sociology in my second and third year

You can take Sociology and Education here! I'd highly recommend it! Its nice to have the two different departments, but you do get the choice of the more sociology based modules in Education whereas I can choose a couple in Sociology. If you've got ay questions lemme know! x
