does anyone think this age restriction is strange?

Ok so i was in Tesco the other day and there was the demonstration bloke handing out free vegetable slicers, but to get one you had to be over 21!! Now correct me if i'm wrong but you can buy razor blades, knives, fireworks and guns at 18 but you cant receive this free!!

And also we have 18 yr old soldiers in body bags from Iraq and Afghanistan, who have died serving their country but wouldn't be allowed to receive a vegetable peeler as they are deemed not to be mature enough!

Has anyone else come across this? or does anyone know why the age is 21??

im just a bit annoyed i couldnt get my slicer even though i am legally old enough to do pretty much everything else!!!

I do think it appears stupid when you ARE mature enough, but it may be seen as a necessary safety precaution, I think.

The fact is that most people aged 18 and above ARE mature enough to handle a vegetable peeler (and it sounds ridiculous just saying that), but there are a fair few angsty teenagers who think it's a good idea to cut their wrists open with such 'tools'. Admittedly, no teen is going to have a problem finding a vegetable peeler/slicer elsewhere anyway, but the shops will want to be sure that they're not to blame!

They probably don't want to give out loads of free vegetable slicers to people who aren't going to spend money on their other kitchenware products.

Generally, it will be the over 21s buying that stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong but not many undergrad students or non-students who are 18-21 will care for a quality set of slicers.

It's easy to discriminate against young adults, just make it look like it's for 'safety reasons'.
Society is screwed up, we arent allowed to technicallly WATCH porn till we are 18, when the law states we can perform the act itself at 16?

What kind of logic is that?

Porn =/= sex.

You cannot perform porn at 16 years old.

i suppose the shops dont want the blame, but does that mean if you found 1p on the floor and 'bought' the slicer that is perfectly fine and the shops then dont care if u went home and cut your wrists? lol this is a strange one but the man who was selling them was canadian and couldnt tell me why, all he said was 'it is the law'!!

Perhaps he got himself muddled. In Tesco, the rule is if you look below 21, they ask you for ID proving you're above 18, as 16-18 year olds or so can look similar in age.

The actual law is 18. As a poor student, I would have gone schizo for a free potato peeler. :frown:

that is true, and i did have that in mind when i was posting, but watching it surely is to distracting for one to consider creating one.

when you watch porn, you dont watch it with intention of creating one (usually), your watching, and more often than not, getting off to, the act portrayed in the porn. Fair enough you cant and should be allowed to perform porn at 16 but watching cannot be that bad. Yes i know there are negatives to watching porn, but who waited till turning 18 to watch it?

i was considering going down the 'we can play with toys at age four yet not be allowed to work in the factory that makes the toys' argument, but its too slippery and flawed for a sunday afternooon.

it's any consolation they really are ****. He showed us it juicing an orange - but you dont get any juice out really, just a waste of orange. and you can't really make all the fancy vegetable things that it says you can.

yeah i was working in Tesco few months back and they were doing all our 'Think 23' training. while i was there i heard our store got in trouble cos we sold alcohol to a 19 year old without IDing them. And i thought to myself, there's nothing wrong with that he was legally allowed to buy the drink!! and our manager moaned at us for ages over that and i couldnt really understand why, we didnt break the law and it was possible that this man looked 21!!

In Mills (which used to be Sainsburys, which used to be Jacksons) they ID you if you look under 30.

I get that they're just trying to be safe, but it's getting a bit ridiculous now.

Me and my boyfriend saw that when we were doing the weekly shop. It was really ******* annoying, I would have actually really liked a free slicer. I'm guessing they didn't want the papers going on about them giving weapons to teenagers or something though.

i understand that, but like someone said in an above post that must be classed as discrimination because we are old enough to buy them but tesco think that teenagers would just attack each other with a vegetable slicer lol, are they saying 'if u buy a bag of razor blades we dont care if you attack each other cos u have paid for them, but we dont want you attacking each other for free!!' its like saying old people cant have electrical goods because they may not know how to use them and electrocute themselves!

I do agree its stupid. But I also think there is a good chance the Daily Mail or something would have run a OMGG TESCO ARE GIVING LETHAL "VEGETABLE SLICER" WEAPONS TO TEEN HOODIE GANGS. They were just covering their own backs. Still, I would really have liked to get a free slicer, all of our knives are rubbish.
Nah man I work for a demonstrating company in a supermarket, and when we do demonstrations with age restricted products (like alcohol/knives/cooking stuff etc.) we are told to target people who are generally over 21/25. It's just so we don't get into trouble. He was probably wrong to tell you you WEREN'T ALLOWED to have one, but that's how it rolls. You can buy one at 18!

Nope it said on the tannoy "customers over 21 can get a free vegetable slicer by the entrance".
