What the hell is a prefect ?

I'm not entirely confident of becoming a house captain or monitor (my school's version of prefect)
However there is a chance that I will be deputy house captain. Having looked through the applicant profiles, lots of people who got in to medicine have been a house captain or prefect.
I've been thinking of alternative ways to show responsibilty, such as peer mentoring.
How much will this affect my application? Will it disadvantage me greatly? Sorry if this has been asked before.
