For an Apple Mac you'd need an Airport or Airport Extreme card. The newest ones come with them built in, but may be an option for older ones. Worst case, the older Airport cards can be had for around £50-60. Have a look at:

I have a relatively new powerbook (-> airport card built in)
Do I need an airport express or airport extreme base station
or can I connect to the HAMPSTEAD net (if in fact it is one, the link you posted only listed chancery lane library and guys campus) just with the built in card?
what exacly is this "Common Area Wireless"?
Is it an intranet just for the Hall of Residence?
Can I connect to the internet through it?

All you will need in terms of hardware is your pre-installed Airport Card. Basically, the campus will already have some wireless access points dotted around (equivalent to Airport Base Stations), so you as a client will just have to connect.
Hey presto!
