Should I go into Nursing?

So I'm 28 and currently work in a residential home and I have NVQ level 2 in Health & Social Care.

I am currently studying Science with the OU but thinking of changing to either Maths or Health Studies. If after whichever I pick I really want to get into Nursing, so 2014 ish, which would be best Mental Health or Adult?

When I worked in a mental health home a few years ago (residents had come from Epsom Hostital) I got told loads of horrible stories from the staff who were mental health nursers. This didn't put me off though. Would the fact that I work with the elderly mean I would be better off with Mental Health? I wouldn't want to do mental health then find I'd like to work on say a theatre ward.

Could I do a post-grad course if I take the Health studies under grad option?
What is a 'general nurse'?

Why dont you try gain a bit of experience in different areas. I understand with youre current job this may be hard but you could try maybe bank work in different places etc just to get an over view of things.

I know its early as well, but why not order some uni prospectuses, that way you can have a look what either course covers etc.
We can't tell you whether you should be a nurse or not; however looking at your sig seems you have already planned out way in advance.

You know there is absoloutely no reason right now why you can't apply for nursing anyway with your GCSE's- get in early, do the diploma and switch to the degree in 2nd/3rd year. Get some work experience in the different branches to help make up your mind; however if you're looking to apply 2014, there are rumours and I know nottingham uni are seriously considering this- of scrapping branch training.

A general nurse, is an RGN- Basically an adult branch trained nurse

I can't afford to train right now, only via OU. Looking at London or South Coast Uni's.

So if they scrap branch training would you specialise once you have an UG degree?

I know City Uni do a PG diploma and accept Health Studies at UG - actually not sure if it is City will check.

You can't afford to train yet can afford to pay ou costs, when nurse training is free and with a nice bursary on top which more than cover living costs?!

I get fiance for the OU so don't pay anything and don't live at home. I don't just need to cover my rent but all other bills too.

I would love to bank shifts at other places but how do I go about this?

You could see if your local hospital bank is taking on. Sometimes these can be quite tricky to get onto and in quite high demand.

You can also do it via agencies. So just have a browse for agencies in your local area, these would bank in places besides hospitals aswell such as care homes etc.

So nursing agencies or care agencies.

Pretty much.

Just do a bit of a search for your local area etc and see what you get. When it comes to nursing its more care experience they are after opposed to actual nursing contact.
