Getting into a uni that isn't first or second choice?

My neighbor successfully got into university this year by getting into her third choice university.

Forgive me for being dumb, but how does this work? I thought that you applied to 5 universities through UCAS to see if you got an offer from them, and then you chose a firm offer and an insurance?

Thats 2 so how does the 3rd accept you? She got one of those emails that you get at like 6am to say whether you've been successful or not.

I will be applying to university this year, so knowing this would be very helpful.

In that case it may be that she didn't get an offer from her favourite uni, and put her second fave as her firm and her third fave as her insurance.
