I didn't receive a 'welcome pack', although I was obviously a returning student. That said, most of the stuff I received in the 'welcome pack' before I came to Edinburgh as an undergraduate turned up either via Euclid/MyEd/SMS email before I started my postgraduate degree, or was distributed in welcome meetings during freshers week.

Thanks for your help!

I received on the SMS mail the matriculation form and by post the student card form. I was wondering whether the Uni sends something about how to pay fees, for example.

No, I sussed out fee payment myself from their website.

International relations, maybe the course that includes public policy. No law or medicine or anything like that.

Ok well in that case it will be dependent on your undergraduate degree. You'll need the equivalent of a 2:i to be considered, most likely.

No. http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/finance/students/fees
Question for people doing History, Anthropology, Politics, any combination of those or any joint honours really: how flexible are joint honours? My interest is very inter-disciplinary and I couldn't find on the site quite how able you are to pick outside papers but also to do a 'bridge' dissertation like at York.

How flexible do you need it to be? You're required to do a certain number of credits from each subject. Your dissertation will be in one or the other, but there's clearly nothing to prevent you from writing a political History dissertation...

I also meant how free are you to pick what you like out if each subject. Of course political history is easy but what about mixing all three? My interest is the cultural differences in various key political movements. I suppose it might have to wait for postgrad but I was just interested in how free you are. How broad is the selection? Oh and most importantly can you do history of political thought and socialist history?

Just wondering if it's possible to live on £23.50 a week? That's what my loan is giving me and if I can't get a job it's all I'll have. Not really sure if I can manage that! If anyone has any experience dealing with roughly that amount how did you split the cash between things like food, going out etc? and regarding the free bus that goes around the campus, would that be able to take me to the old medical school and the geography buildings? and probably DHT too? Thank you

Well it's not a lot of money... We only have the KB Shuttle bus which runs between central area and King's Buildings - so to get to DHT and the like I should you'll have to walk like everyone else

Well, as I mentioned, I'll meet the grade standard. My degree is a 2:i, my GPA is higher than the GPA they told me I needed to meet.

I read here earlier that if you're American/Canadian and have the GPA, you're most likely in. Is that still true or has that changed? I emailed the school adviser and they only told me of the GPA requirement and sent me to their FAQ page when I asked what standards I needed to meet. Didn't seem like there was much..

That discussion was for undergraduate, where is a lot more competitive and there are government funded places for UK (and therefore EU) students whereas postgraduate is entirely self funded regardless of where you're from. With postgrad its "easier" to get in for everyone for this reason so as long as you meet the requirements and have a strong personal statement then you've got good chance of being considered for a place.

Hi, please don't post this in the Current Students Thread. I've moved your post here.

I suggest you get in touch with the appropriate admissions departments (UG or PG in the correct College) as they are responsible for issuing CAS numbers.

Hello! ^^
I just have some minor questions to ask, I want to know if it is okay for students to buy only e-books? The textbooks are really heavy!
Do students need to carry them to class everytime?
Do online uni. resources include access to every textbook/ reference book online for free?
If only reference books can be brought as e-books, is it better if I buy a device specially for reading e-books, like a Kindle or ipad?
I only have a laptop at the moment. My laptop weights about 2.3kg, is it too heavy to be brought to school everyday?
Should I buy a new laptop? If I should, which brand will you recommend?
If I am too buy a new laptop through the university soon after I arrive, should I bring my current laptop with me to Edinburgh?
Does every student bring their laptop to class? I plan to take notes in lectures with my laptop everytime, is it a good idea?
What exactly is a NUS extra card? Is it a must have item? If I have quite a lot of things to buy in Edinburgh, like pillow/pillow case/wellies etc., should I buy them on the first few days in Edinburgh or wait until I get my NUS extra card or student card etc. so that I will get a discount at shops?

I am verry sorry for my loads of questions! Thank you in advance!
I don't have a modern language at GCSE but got A*, a,a at A level in Economics, politics and geography... will I definetly get rejected for International relations as they specify " at least one language at GCSE other than english" ??

Hey everyone! I'm a fresher this year and I'm studying Biological Sciences with Management. I had a question about the required Origin and Diversity of Life 1 course for all first year biological sciences students. I'm confused about the timetable for the course listed here http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/12-13/dpt/cxbilg08001.htm. How many labs do we have per week? Is it really four times a week? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

It'll only be once a week, you'll either be allocated a slot or you'll be able to sign up to them. They might not be every week either, I've not done the course, but I'm basing this off other courses were I've had labs to do and I've only had to do 2 or 3 a semester for each course.
