Warwick A101 applicants (2013)

Hey everyone,

There's no thread for entry in 2013 to Warwick's GEM course, so thought I'd make one! Who else is applying there, with what backgrounds, and where else are you considering applying to and why?

I'm thinking of applying to Warwick, Newcastle, Southampton & Barts or Imperial. My background is essentially shocking prior to my degree, where I am now on track for a 1st in Biomedical Science.

My experience is as follows: I've been helping to care for my partner's grandfather who lives with us, and suffers from various illnesses and so requires full-time care. I'm currently on my placement at the University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM) in a clinical NHS laboratory, where I've also had the chance to sit in on clinics with the consultants and hopefully going to get on a ward round or two before I leave!

This summer I'm hoping to get nursing home voluntary work. Previous to this I've worked at Oxfam, done D of E Silver Award, first aid training and deaf/blind communication.

I'm looking forward to hearing about all your backgrounds and application progressions  best of luck!

Matt

Hi! I'm also considering Warwick though not 100% sure yet and I've booked my UKCAT for the 17th of July (an early bird like you!)

Currently doing Biomedical sciences at King's College London and on track for 2.1/1st haven't got this years results yet so can't say for sure.

Planning to avoid GAMSAT unis I think, don't really have the time to devote to revise for it this summer!
Sweet, are you going to the open day on the 5th?

Hi all!

Thanks for setting up this thread Matt - exactly what I was looking for.

I'm taking the UKCAT on 4th July and will be considering applying to GEM course at Warwick depending on the results! My degree is in music but they do say they accept any degree - this may be a lot shot but I have been thinking about becoming a medic a lot recently and so thought why not give it a try!

Having worked as a music teacher for a few years I decided it wasn't for me and know set on working in healthcare. I currently work in the NHS, originally intending to find a path towards healthcare research but now considering something more involved with patient care.

Anyone got any tips for the UKCAT? I bought the 600 questions book which is good practice but not filling me with hope!

Hey, good to see more applicants are finding this thread  I've also used the 600Q book (my test is a little later than yours on the 9th). In addition I signed up to medify.co.uk back when it cost £10 for a lifetime (it's now £25 a month ) but the quality is very good and I'd recommend it for good practice. Additionally there's emedica but it's fairly expensive again, and only really good for AR practice. Are you coming on the 5th? All the best for your test on the 4th

Hey guys! No i'm not going on the 5th, i'll be working that day unforunately. Hopefully I won't miss too much :s
I'm using 600q too but want as much practice as possible so will be checking out medify.com thanks for the tip! I applied for medicine as an undergad as well and averaged about 650 on the ukcat but with hindsight didn't practice as much as I could have so I'm hoping to really ace it this time by putting in the work. But tbh i'm feeling a little bit dispirited; I guess I stupidly expected the practice ones to feel really easy now I'm older haha silly me.

@gooldini Its great you've realised what you really want to do and are going for it - best of luck! I'm sure they won't discriminate against music since they've said they'll accept people of any degree background

Also, any body used careergym.com for ukcat practice? would be useful to know how accurate it is before paying for it.

If anything interesting or specifically new comes up on the day I'll share it here  What degree did you study out of curiosity?

With regards to careergym, I used their free questions a few weeks ago and wasn't that impressed. The structure is completely different from the real thing, though AR might be worth a shout. Still, I think there are better sites for the money.

Thank you that would be awesome  so kind of you!

And thanks for the tip about career gym  I'm doing Biomedical Sciences at Kings College, you?
KCL actually have an internal application scheme for Medicine where you apply early (this month) using just your personal statement and current degree grades and if they like you they guarantee you an interview when/if you apply there during the UCAS cycle, regardless of what your UKCAT score is, so hopefully if they like me I can afford to mess up on UKCAT just a little lol.

But because of that I've been working on my p.s. all month instead of UKCAT practice. Finally finished it now but to be safe I've rescheduled my UKCAT for the 21st so I now have three weeks (while working full time) to revise!

I know its far away but Warwicks selection centre makes em nervous just because I've never done any thing like that; its one of the reasons I'm not certain if I'll aplly yet. Got to do more research I think

Well that's pretty awesome, good luck with the King's internal application. Unfortunately my red-brick University doesn't do medicine :P Don't panic about Warwick, I've heard from a lot of people that the selection centre is a piece of cake (especially the written and group sections). The interview will be similar to elsewhere. Also, if you apply to Barts as well, you hit two birds with one stone in the selection centre.

Where else are you considering applying to? I'm probably applying to Warwick, Soton, Imperial and Newcastle or Kings (depends on the UKCAT score haha)

Haha which uni is that? thank you, it is awesome but its only for the 5 year course which is expensive so would obviously still prefer a GEP.

Thank you, thats very reassuring to here! I am considering Barts as well so it probably would be wise to go for both.

As for where I'm applying; I'm sure about King's 5year, Barts 4 year then debating two out of Imperial, BM4 at Soton or Warwick. So we're quite similar actually  Getting my UKCAT scores and exam results for this year will probably help me decide for certain but I'm pretty definite that I won't be going for any GAMSAT ones! Are you applying only for 4year or a mix of both?
Yeah Kings looove their UKCAT and I'd really like to stay there since I already know and love it there but their GPEP course is impossible to get in and if (big if) I get 4 year anywhere else it makes more financial sense to go for that. Hopefully I'll at least get to stay in london but we'll see

Ah we are pretty similar haha, well maybe we're future coursemates? let's hope so. Aye I've been put off GAMSAT unless I flunk the UKCAT considerably that even Soton wouldn't accept (their cut off last year or the year before was about 612 or something!).

As for the course, I can in no way afford a 5-year course so it's GEP all the way for me

Lets hope so indeed! and fingers crossed neither of us has to go through the horror of GAMSAT haha. Have fun(?) at the open day

Hi Evryone!! I am really considering applying to warwick depending on how my ukcat goes. I currently hold a 1st class in chemistry specialising in pharmaceutical science from university of Hull. I am just wondering what ukcat cutt off score have they used in the past ? and what cut off score do you reckon they will be using ??
In previous years, Warwick have seemed to want somewhere around 670 average, but as they rank applicants this figure will change from year to year.

Hi
I am applying too.
I have a 2:1 in disaster management from coventry, A levels and gcse's average.... I have a few years of National/international disaster management working in a field hospital for a long period of time and worked on intl public health/WASH projects. Red Cross/fire service in the UK where i was an Emergency response medic. Currently located in Bangkok working in disaster management and public health, done a few week traditional work exp in NHS and spent 3 months training with a neuro consultant for a job
I dont have the traditional background at all, which is my downfall.
and last year Warwick lost my application on 3 occasions (long story!) which lead to me getting this job  UKCAT booked for 15th August in BKK... need to revise somehow :/
