Depends on the subject - SOAS has a much more valuable international reputation and many international links which will aid you. If you are taking a subject in one of SOAS's fortés - e.g. Law, East asian studies, I recommend SOAS, but if you are looking for better domestic prospects, and don't fancy the prospect of living in London, go for Durham. In terms of prospects, etc. there isn't an awful lot to choose between them, although personally I would say SOAS.

I tend to disagree. I think Durham has a far better reputation. SOAS only seems to excel in those areas that it specialises in .ie. Oriental and African languages. If you plan to work for an international company, then SOAS will prove useful if you have the language that they desire. However, Durham is highly respected by companies, both home and international.
If you were going to do for example Law, a Durham LLB would seem better than one from SOAS, but if you wanted to work with China, an LLB from Durham would pale in comparision to a BA in Chinese from SOAS followed by an LPC.

I stand corrected on "overall reputation" since I am not particularly knowledgable about Durham, although the university choice in terms of career prospects should be considered, as you say, by subject, and its prospects, rather than overall reputation. Overall reputation is not as significant in this situation, unless you opt for a less specific subject such as History.
