thinking of applying to newnham for medicine next year and wanted some advice...
what ums/bmat would be good etc...
do the interviews play a big factor in deciding etc?
is it actually easier to get into or not lol?

I am thinking about turning my offer down from newnham (pooled in). This is because I don't want to attend an all female college after attending mixed schools all my life and a single sex college is not a true reflection of society (male and female). Can anyone advise me?:s-smilie:
I'm not at Newnham, but as I understand it it's really not worth worrying about! All-female Colleges really aren't like all-female schools: men are welcome at any time, for one thing.

I'd recommend that you look at the course first: if you really like the course to which you've been accepted, it would be a shame to turn that down when all Colleges are far more alike than different. I suspect that a current Newnham student will see this and be able to give some more concrete advice and information, but I hope that my contribution will be helpful.

(By the way, this discussion will probably be moved into the Newham thread in the "Colleges and Courses" forum.)
I can understand how you feel, I'd feel the same if I was pooled into an all-male college (not that there are any but ya know, hypothetical), but you've got to think that this is an opportunity of a lifetime. I know university will be good pretty much wherever you go, but we all know the doors that open at Cambridge, the fact the facilities are some of the best in the world and the support insanely amazing. The price you personally have to pay for that is that when you go back to your college there won't be any guys around. But you don't really have to spend that much time at your college if you want, you've got other colleges barely a few minutes away on your doorstep so you can socialise and have fun, and just return to your college for a spot of work and sleep if you wanted.

That's the way I'd look at it if I went to an all-boys college anyway. What's your insurance? If you're in love with your insurance uni then it would perhaps be worth reconsidering, but only if you are very very happy with that uni over Cambridge, because rejecting Cambridge seems like the kinda thing you'd always regret (my Dad rejected LSE for Sussex and he always regretted that, for instance)

Absolutely, moving it now. Hopefully there'll be a few more responses from current Newnhamites to put your mind at rest, OP.
any reply to my above post?
Hey Everyone,

I'm a first year undergrad at Newnham studying Engineering.

A little bit about me:

I'm from Northern Ireland, have always attended mixed schools, and was pooled to Newnham.

Most of my A level classes were filled with guys and most of my friends were guys so when I got pooled to Newnham my brain had a bit of a panic attack. Girls like to talk about makeup, I still can't put on my own eyeliner; girls like to talk about shopping, I hate even the idea etc etc etc.

But I decided that it was worth it to go to Cambridge, so I accepted and turned up and my goodness if I didn't just fall in love with Newnham and its people. The place was home by my second day there, I can be found in the buttery every night in my pjs and dressing gown and I wouldn't give up my bunch of friends for anything. Most of them are girls but they are girls like me! No makeup or shopping, just random conversations, DVDs, Guitar Hero or canoeing down the Cam (the river).

After a while you forget there are no men there and in a lot of ways you'll be glad there aren't. The kitchens and bathrooms are much cleaner and there is a lot less immaturity running around.

And remember, Its not a Convent, you are allowed to leave the grounds and meet guys and you're even allowed to bring them back with you!

Join us on facebook and ask any questions you want but you won't find anybody who hates the place!

Newnham's a pretty awesome college, but does have some funny rules regarding male visitors. If I visit my friend there late at night I need a note from her to get out .

By the number of people I spy going in/out it doesn't seem to be a problem though .

We have a rule that says that after a certain time at night you have to pick up and leave visitors back to the porters lodge or send them out with a note (this applies to both male and female visitors but the porters mostly only notice the male ones for obvious reasons). This reduces the amount of strangers walking around the college and is therefore done for safety reasons but mostly the porters are just amused by the notes they receive "I'm done with this one send in the next" for example.

Honestly though you hardly notice the all female thing after a while!

That's brilliant! I am an offer holder of newnham college. Both my mum and I are worried because newnham is a girl college and I've been to a girl school before and I like male friends. Your experience sounds so good!

Just my two cents (having spent 2 years at the college) - if you're female and a well-adjusted, interesting person, what on earth makes you think you're the only one? Cambridge is hardly going to let in a bunch of shallow air-heads. I'm always surprised and a little disappointed to hear women say "I'm interesting, but I find other women tedious."

Oh, that and my circle of close friend at Cambridge is a healthy mix of both genders, so have no fear on that front ladies!

I'm doing a Criminological Mphil at Cambridge in October and will be a member of Newnham College. I just wanted to say hello to any other Newnham ladies!

Awesome! I read English and I'm a Newnhamite, what subject did you apply for?
As Mini Moates and co said: Newnham is definitely NOT an "inferior" college.
I fell in love with the college when I came for my interview, the atmosphere is amazing and it feels like a comfortable, warm and very friendly home away from home. It's an amazing college, so, good for you! And, best of luck !
Hi there! is there anyone who has applied to newnham for history and already has an interview?
Reply 1195
^pretty sure there are no interviews yet as we're still in full term...?
Reply 1196
anyone heard from newnham?
(2012 entry)

^in what sense? Interview dates will have been set, but decisions don't come until the end of next month...
Anybody left on here who got an offer from Newnham this year for 2012 entry? I was pooled to Newnham (PhysNatSci) and would be cool to find out more about it from some direct applicants or current students- I've seen the videos & the pictures, and I already think I'm going to love it
