MSc Applied Maths or Financial Maths? Life after a Maths degree

Hi! I have just finished a Maths degree at Birkbeck and managed a first. Unfortunately I missed a lot of the deadlines for some of the postgrad courses I wanted. I initially was veering towards statistics because that sounds more interesting jobwise. However there wasn't actually much statistics in my course and I failed to get into the Government Stats programme. Moving on from that disaster I started looking into actuary but its actually extremely competitive, and I feel at a disadvantage being a mature student. Also it turns out its a big deal to have only 300 UCAS points instead of 340 and this is a deal-breaker for many firms.
Now I am considering applying for MSc in Mathematical modelling or an MSc in Financial Mathematics and would like some feedback on anyone elses experience with either. Also what are my chances of getting into UCL?
Anyone done Mathematical Modelling? Is it interesting, or very demanding? Totally in the dark here
