Anyone who's good at logic help me

I gave someone 4 pound and they gave me 20 pound. And then I gave them back 16 pound. How is that right? Where is my 4 pound gone? How much should I get back and how much should they get back?

If you gave someone four pounds and they used it.
Then they gave you 20 pounds.

You took four pounds and gave them back sixteen so you took your four pounds back.

That's what I thought but I got incredibly confused. Cause I was wondering where my 4 pound had gone. Thanks

When your friend gave you £20, they actually gave you back £4 with an extra £16. You gave the extra money back and thus all things were even.
