Gazza to appear in court for making "racist joke"

Details of the "joke" here: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/dec/13/paul-gascoigne-accused-of-racist-joke-on-stage-wolverhampton

I get that it's not nice to be on the end of a joke about your race (though some people may feel indifferent or even find it amusing - it depends on the person), but what have we come to as a country when people are being hauled before the courts because of this?

I did not know that this was against the law

Makes me ashamed to be British. The sooner that I can renounce my citizenship, the better. Sadly, this country is finished and cases such as this simply reinforce my belief.

Sorry but this country is way too sensitive now. It has actually got ridiculous.

The police should be done for wasting police time for opening a serious matter on a silly joke like that.

In 80s it was common place to make those sort of jokes "what do you go if an Ethiopian is drowning?" "Throw him a polo mint."

You're right. This country is finished. This new officialdom will just suck everything real down the toilet.

The second link says what he said. He said to a black man that if he didn't smile he wouldn't see him (against a black background). Who honestly cares?

The police are wasting police time by reacting.

When you really, really think about it, take away all the baggage you've come to learn, that joke actually seems pretty innocent. It is literally only a comment on the colour of a persons skin, not on anything it implies about his character, and nor does it say anything good or bad about the skin colour.

This kind of absolutism divides us more than unites us, because it is just as petty as real racism.
Man it's a good job big brother isn't everywhere or I'd have faced the same thing. Years ago had a black colleague wearing a black outfit who was hiding behind a door in a very dimly lit room, genuinely didn't see him when I looked at him (and he knew it), so when I got really close he opened his eyes really wide and I **** myself, was hilarious. So I think both of us would have been taken in, me for being too racist as to be able to see him, and him for taking advantage of what is clearly an offense situation.
If thats a "hate crime" then all my white friends belong in prison too. Pathetic the police are looking into this, whats a judge going to do, give him a 3 year sentence to repent? Absolute waste of resources

Waste of time and money, public spending in a nutshell.
