Retaking an A Level while at uni

So my brother just got A*AAD so he's got into his firm but he's really disappointed about the D in an unrelated subject. He wants to try and see if he can redo the fourth A Level while at uni because he's absolutely devastated at getting a D in a subject, in this case physics. Is there any way to do this?

Congratulations to your brother. Has he considered asking about the remark? Assuming he was expecting an A or A* in physics, a D is quite a bit below.
If he wants to resit still then he'd need to find a centre that accepts private candidates. This can be an expensive endeavour however as he'd need to pay for the exam entries plus the administrative fees. And he may find that he's too burnt out from revision for his summer exams at University to prepare for the resits.

First of all, congrats to him. What was his firm choice?

I think he can take it as an external candidate. However, i strongly advise against it, since he has already gotten to university.

He should focus on the next stage if his academic journey rather than battling with sixth form physics. It seems he may never need the subject, so it becomes a useless pursuit.

Yes, there is a way (he could study independently and arrange to do the exam as a private candidate at a local exam centre), but it would be a complete waste of time - he's got into university, that's all that matters. A levels cease to be relevant once you have a degree.
I took an a-level when I was at uni. But that was for reapplying to UCAS.
I wouldn't bother. He would essentially doing it purely for ego. Better to invest the time and money in focusing on the degree. Also keep in mind that the first term at uni is generally... "chaotic". Remember the leap from GCSE's to A-Level where you were wondering to yourself wth all of it was about? That's about to happen again. On top of that there is the inevitable fresher's freedom. Is he really likely to be sat at home studying not only however many modules he has, plus extra A-level (redundant) physics whilst everyone else is out partying and socialising?

School held your hand through everything, Uni does not. Don't overload your system needlessly. If it *REALLY* bothers him in the future then there's nothing to stop him retaking them in 10 yrs time when he's established in "life" and has some free time to burn.

How did that go for you? Did you find it too stressful studying at uni and retaking an a level?

also could i not register my resit with my sixth form?
Hey guys, I’m sorry for my late reply. It did work out in the end - I got an A* and now I’m going into final year at my dream university!
I hope my story would somehow boost your confidence. Just make sure you know EVERYTHING to make an informed decision!

Hi. I'm thinking about retaking English Lit A-Level while going into my first year of Law but I'm scared the degree will be too difficult.

Do you recommend doing this? I really don't want to take time out to resit because I'm scared I'll become depressed and that I worked so hard. I got ABD (D in Lit) and need higher to get into better firms. How did you manage your time etc? Also what A-Level and degree did you do?

That’s a tricky situation. I did A-Level English Lang/Lit in order to reapply for UCAS, and I was doing linguistics at a Scottish university at that time. As you may know, most undergraduate degrees in Scotland are four years long. You take ‘preparatory’ courses in the first two years and they are relatively easy. This is why I was able to manage preparing for my A-Level alongside my university studies (which I virtually ignored). I did take the exams and pass my first year anyway.

So my case is very different from yours, as I imagine a law degree is very time-consuming. Ultimately, it depends on whether you truly need a better grade to get into a better firm. Would that be better if you focus on your degree and get a decent grade to show to your potential employer that you are qualified? Does an a-level subject (not even related to law) matter? Obviously I’m not the best person to answer these questions as I’m not familiar with the legal industry. I’d suggest asking your mentors or checking the recruitment portals/websites to see what grades you need for a-levels before committing yourself to anything. As I said, make an informed decision.

I hope it helps

Which universities do you want to transfer to?

Why not take a gap year?

If you aren’t successful in transferring will you be happy continuing at your current university?
