Off campus accomodation?

I've applied for deferred entry so I don't know when I'll be offered accomodation, but I was wondering wat living off campus was like?

My boyfriend is moving down to Exeter but not going to the uni, so we would quite like to live together, but is it a good idea to live off campus in your first
year? Will I miss out on anything? Also, how epxensive is it?!

You'll miss out of all the Hall Experience, its something I wouldn't want to miss out on at all. I've made so many good friends in halls, that I wouldn't make normally.

Is living in halls that important for socialising? Cos I've heard some people say that they hardly ever stay friends with people they meet in halls.

I wouldn't live out in the first year, no. Living in halls won't stop you from seeing your boyfriend, so why would you want to pass up the opportunity of making so many new friends? Put it this way, you don't make friends in lectures - all my friends have come from my various living arrangements and from my society activities.

Living off campus is fine, but expensive. Houses for 5-6 people generally tend to be £75 a week EACH so you'd be looking at the same amount of money if not more for the two of you to live somewhere. Plus, if your boyfriend isn't a student he'd have to pay council tax. Then there's bills and food. Given that all the bills are included in all campus accommodation and you don't have to pay council tax it works out much cheaper.

although different halls have differenet levels of socialising: lopes has a lot better atmosphere than holland it seems for example, i'm in birks and i am living with one friend from another block next year but i met her on my course as birks is so large you generally only meet people from your floor and possibly your block , but i have made some really good friends especially my next door neighbour. you definitely make friends in your halls especially in catered as you always eat dinner with them and it's a great time for a gossip

Ok that's a lot more than I thought! My boyfriends going to be at college so I don't know about council tax, but I had just assumed it would be cheaper to live together.

Exeter is pretty expensive to begin with I'm afraid :frown:

If your boyfriend's going to be at college how were you both planning on having enough money for all the living expenses?

Tis complicated! My parents and grandparents have a sort of joint account thing to pay for my fees so I'm planning on working and saving during my gap year. My boyfriends only doing art foundation for a year anyway so hopefully we'll get by with jobs and loans! I'm ever optimistic, although I'll probablt be eating baked beans for a year!
