Well I did French Gcse and I'm teaching myself the basics of Japanese and ancient greek this summer, so I'm not too worried about languages. After all, they start teaching you from scratch.

That's true. It's really just that I'd take any excuse for learning Arabic, hehe. Let me know how self-teaching Ancient Greek goes; every now and then I want to try that too, but there I'm always scared off, I don't know why.

Good luck with your application.

Yes Russian is the best! You have such great literature. I know there are some people who study their native language so it's possible, but (I think) usually they haven't studied literature & history of the country before, so they still get a lot out of the course. That's different for you so they might not like it so much in that case. On the other hand it might not matter at all, I have no idea actually! Just pitching in my 2 cents.

Thank you, really. I hope admissions office will make it clear for me. Permission to make an application - that's all I need

llys

I just found something that I hope might help you.
There is a Russian Society at the University of Cambridge, and they have their own forum online, and I'm just so sure someone there must know about how you should go about it! I mean I just can't believe that there aren't any Russians from Russia* at Cambridge so it must be possible! Maybe you just had really bad luck with the colleges you tried. :frown:

There is probably such a society at Oxford too.

*As opposed to Russians who went to boarding school in the UK and therefore don't have the qualifications problem.. :frown:

Thank you again  The first thing that I found in the begining of my Oxbridge research was this forum. I asked it's members about my qualifications and they answered that there are not any Russians in Cambridge who was applying with the same qualifications :frown: I'm the first hehe! It's not funny actually... Cambridge Colleges have refused me because they don't have such experience. Why can't I give them this experience? :frown: All Colleges have advised me to apply after my graduating in Russia, but I don't want to.
The same forum of Oxford seems to be dead. There are only two or three threads and nobody visits it :frown:
I wish I went to boarding school of did IB, but I didn't.
Well, now all I want is to get an answer from Oxford. They have said that they are currently looking into my query

Thanks! I cant tell you how valuable encouragement is to me!
At my interview at New College for E&M, one of the tutors told everyone after our exam that the only thing the interviewers are looking for is the candidate who are most likely to get firsts.
Certainly GCSE are important because they get you to the interview and give an indication that you do well in exams but i believe the tutors our looking for an ability to speak intelligently and passionately about the student's chosen subject.

I was wondering if i had any chance, my gcses werent what i hoped for..

First of all, I don't know anything much about SPS, so I can tell you what I think but you should definitely find some SPSlers on here who can give you a so much more substantiated opinion. :p:
I think your GCSE grades and your AS subject choices are very good - but I don't know how competitive SPS is. (I sometimes think for arts subjects GCSEs are more important than say for science or engineering subjects, which are very specialised, because for arts subject a broader knowledge base is more favorable? This might or might not be true and might or might not matter in your case.)
I think the C in Biology might be a bit problematic because part of SPS is psychology, which is probably either developmental or experimental or social psychology - in the first two instances Biology could be considered helpful. (NB I don't know if it is! - It probably isn't.) In any case, I think you can choose Politics or Sociology over Psychology in your degree, and then science GCSEs are probably not a big factor in admissions.
I'd probably resit it just in case, but please don't do anything just because I say I would. :p: Maybe check out the SPS thread in the Cambridge forum.

Personal statement is in for friday!

Why?!
Reply 594
the school want it in early.. but i do not understand why this early.. im still not completely sure about my course choices yet.. (most open days are in sept for me) and my dads abroad til friday who was meant to help me, so i wont really be able to do much specific p.s. stuff prior to that! and our school is renowned for sending them off late too!
when aimhigher rang school to see if we were interested in oxbridge residentials, they said no without asking, so that we had to apply ourselves to get onto it.. looks like we are all alone!
Reply 595
J-OD, as I said Bio may not be really important. Definitely get some other opinions. + In either case I'd definitely give it a shot anyway!

if you dont apply, you cant get a place I suppose..

listen, 4 A* and the few As you have are plenty at GCSE level. As long as you get mostly A/A* at GCSE it wont do any damage. Focus on your a levels.

My brother got 2 A* 9 A and 1 C and got a conditional offer of AAA at oxford to study history. (He didnt get the AAA though lol)

Yeah I don't think it's all about grades.
My cousin got into Merton College, Oxford to do astrophysics with gcse's of 3a*,4a,2b and a levels of aaad

omg that would be annoying. If I got an offer I would work my ass off to get the grades.
