Getting braces at 17? Insecure!

So basically i’ve just been to the dentist and he’s told me i need braces to get rid of a baby tooth and also straighten out this one tooth which is a bit bent but you can’t really tell. apart from that he said my teeth are fine but i’m going into year 13 and really don’t want to go to uni with braces i’d feel so insecure. do guys think it’s ugly on girls at that age? i’ll prob have them for 2 years but i just feel so embarrassed about it, i also wanted to get into acting but the braces might effect that now, my teeth aren’t horrible he said they’re “beautiful” the only problems are the one bent tooth and a baby tooth. i’m literally 17 w no first kiss or boyfriend, ive been asked out sure but i lowkey feel like i’m going to get bullied for it fml. i’m going to a specialist soon to see what i can do, is it uncommon in uni?

I know, it looks good on a lot of people but i just don’t think it’ll look good on me, i really don’t want it to affect my social life in uni and year13
One of my friends has braces and for 2 months I hadn't even noticed until he talked about it. They're not as easy to notice as u think unless u tell ppl about it

First of all, think about yourself and not what others will think of you, especially guys. Why does it matter whether a guy finds braces ugly or not? Every man is different, and even then, you should only wear braces to fix the positioning of your teeth, and not for aesthetic reasons. Some people have braces at the age of 30, and believe me, they have the last laugh when their teeth are perfect. If you told someone from 250 years ago that they only had to wear braces for 2 years so that their teeth would remain straight for the rest of their life, so as long as they wear retainers at night, they would jump at the chance. Of course, times have changed, but the main point I am trying to get across is that braces are a personal investment, and that the end result is totally worth it.

If you feel that braces will affect your speech and sometimes lead to gum scars, try and ask for lingual braces, or at least, I believe that is what they are called. They are braces that are placed on the back of your teeth. They are a lot harder to clean, but see what your dentist advices. Also, if you have the money too, try Invisalign, unless your dentist states that braces are the only way forward.

Having regrets is impractical and does not bring you any closer to feeling happy and finding a solution. Remember this, you choose what makes you insecure. Insecurity does not stem from what other people think of you, it comes from what you choose to let yourself be hurt and offended by. By overcoming the hurdles of insecurity over time, you will feel a lot happier in the future. If people look at you differently due to your braces, let them. You have no idea what they are thinking, and in all seriousness, any decent person would understand that you are wearing them to make your teeth straighter. Braces contribute towards oral hygiene, and this is because by straightening out teeth, it is easier to clean them, while with crowded teeth, it is hard to clean the entire tooth. Also, when you complete the braces treatment, your bite will be where it should be, and so it will actually improve your aesthetic, as I see that this is something that you take pride in.
I know it is easy to say it, but don't worry about it. I know people in their mid twenties who have braces. And honestly, i think nearly every third kid had braces at one point in their life. And people mostly make fun of other people when they are 11-15. I had braces when i was 13/4-16 and i was a bit verbally bullied in my class when i was younger (it was just kids being kids and i am still in class with the people and they are all fine, it stopped completely) but nobody ever said anything about the braces. Also i think people at uni will have bigger problems than you wearing braces

You are right. At university, there is so much more to consider in your personal life, and so someone else wearing braces is never, ever going to be a thing that they will constantly think about. This is now addressing the OP. When being in public, how many faces do you remember? In my case, it is none. That is exactly how other people will view your braces. Initially, they may just look at it (because not everyone wears it, as they may already have previously worn them) and a few seconds later, they will just forget about it, in the same way you forget about the faces you saw in public.

At university, you have to handle your degree and your financials. More specifically, deadlines, writing up lecture notes, being a part of societies or institutions, research and general life. Believe me, your braces will never be in anyone else's mind.
bruh honestly i had them on both top and bottom from year 6 to year 8 then had them off and had them put back on the top again in year 10 for another year and a bit, now i have fixed retainers behind both top and bottom of teeth and I have to put a plastic retainer in my top every night! Trust me braces are not that big of a deal than people make out, they just need to grow up and stop complaining. The vast majority of you will not be forced to have to deal with retainers for the rest of your life SMH
Honestly, i even forget who wears glasses, and that is something you can clearly see even from distance
I wish I got braces during this time, it would've been perfect because everyone was home for half a year:redface:
Not exactly. I've never had braces, the dentist said my teeth weren't bent enough. It's just the bottom row that needs to be fixed, really, because there's a tooth that kind of sticks out because of overcrowding.
prsom:smile: me too. It isn't that big of an issue, and you can't even see it, but it would be nice to have perfectly straight teeth.
I had braces during my final year in school and no one noticed it until half of the year was over!! I am glad now though I got to wear it because it was definitely worth it!!

Apart from there have been no dentist appointments to tighten the braces for months so they‘d essentially just been lumps of metal on your teeth doing nothing :dontknow:
