MA Law at the University of Bristol

Hi all, I submitted my application this Friday to the MA Law programme, opting for 2022 entry due to my military service in South Korea. I have several questions on the programme & its admissions process.

I picked up the programme due to the fact that it is a post-graduate law degree that spreads out the GDL's core subjects into two years.

Considering I will have to take the SQE that will be launched from 2021 onwards, I think it is absolutely important to build a solid ground of legal knowledge and skills to pass the exam. Is the programme the right choice to offer such prowess? Are there any talks from the programme on how they would handle the new qualification route more effectively than the status quo? I have heard that some Russell Group universities launched specialised teachings for the SQE to their 2021 intakes, and I wonder if Bristol might follow similar routes.

Here comes my another question on the admissions. I am not sure you guys know this online transcript provider called GradIntelligence, but it is from which I downloaded a pdf file of my university transcript in order to submit it on the application. The provider is authorised by the university, so I wonder Bristol would also consider it as an official proof to process my application. I could have also provided my degree certificate, but it is unfortunately not here yet - probably because of the distance between the UK and South Korea. So I want to know if this transcript can be enough for them to process my application; it is quite a strong one I think since I have a First Class degree from one of the Russell Group unis in London.

Thank you!!

I'm also considering applying to this course.

With regards to the transcript I'd write to them directly, they're the only people that can tell you with 100% confidence.

The SQE is an interesting development, in theory you could take it without ever studying Law, but I think that you'd be very hard pressed to find a firm that would hire you other than some which are also offering apprenticeships with part-time training which would count towards the 2 year work experience requirement. Some existing law course providers are planning on offering courses directly for the SQE, 40 weeks part-time for non-law graduates.

The MA programme (which is effectively a senior status LLB in all but name) also gives you the opportunity to take some interesting electives.

This is not entirely true. I have not gone through a senior-status LLB, but I am a graduate of the MA in Law at Bristol. As such I do know, that our exams were not the same as the Undergrads at Bristol, nor were they marked on the same level as the Undergrads, which is why it has a Graduate School moniker.

We were expected to know the material in more depth, and we were taught the material in greater depth, which was reflected in the questions asked on the papers as well as marking of the papers.

Was it a lot of work, yes, we had to learn the nuts and bolts of each core subject (as done in any LLB), however we were also responsible to learn and understand some of the more nuanced aspects of each subject.

Hi there, I've gotten accepted into MA Law at Bristol and was wondering, how is your career trajectory like? Were you easily employable by law firms and have you passed to become a Barrister?

Also read that modules are graded so strictly that getting an overall Distinction is unheard of for MA Law. Is this true, did the majority of your mates get an overall pass? Kinda makes it impossible to do well in that case..

Hello, answering each point in turn:

Congrats on your offer, I am indeed a barrister and my career is proceeding well, thank you. Still learning and developing as all practitioners should.

I was easily employable as were the rest of my cohort. If a chambers or firm did not know the qualification, the Uni name eased any initial reticence and answers regarding the qualification were easily accessible.

Modules are graded to a high standard, that much is true, so much so that a Distinction is like hen's teeth. There was an even splatter of grades in the 2:1 - 2:2 category I suspect. There were some who also id not receive the degree, but instead received the Pg. Dip. designation.

SIGH you really are a Debbie downer aren't you... Sir and I use that word liberally, you do not know my academic background and experience level, so please speak only of what you know.

Thanks you.

Thanks for your input, not getting defensive, but thanks for your concern. Brizzle did me just fine thanks in my quest to becoming a barrister.

You speak with such brio mixed with melancholy and derision, with the greatest of respect you don't seem very happy with your lot in life, I sincerely hope this changes for you and that you have a good evening with a restful sleep

Nothing, it’s not humblebragging but again thanks for your input... still getting the above-mentioned vibe from you though... you seem to speak a lot about things you may not be as familiar with s you let on and then bristle at the pushback.

Sigh, this is unhelpful for the OP... I get it you feel you must answer and be combative to reinforce (to yourself) that your opinion is viable and needed, well knock yourself out. I said my piece, you are entitled to your opinions, you can believe what you will about me...

Makes no sense engaging with you in this manner anymore... OP if you have any specific questions please do not hesitate to PM me... smh while chuckling...

so youre pretending to be all superior and claiming that im the one "lacking knowledge" but youre not willing to tell us what that knowledge is. this is very helpful to the op because you made it sound like brizzie has some kind of special sauce when it increasingly looks like it doesnt.

(oh yeah but ofc OP is welcome to PM you, no one can call you out via PMs! so convenient )
