University of Bristol Accommodation

Hi everyone, I’m an international applicant planning to firm my Bristol offer and will likely start the course in upcoming September:smile: I’ve read about the sorts of accommodation they provide and honestly feel a bit overwhelmed, don’t really know what to choose!!
On the whole I would prefer en-suite but since I don’t have any sufficient reasons (eg medical issues), are my chances of being allocated an en-suite low?
Don’t rly mind about catered/self-catered since there are pros and cons to both, but I’d prefer being closer to the university (I hate bus rides and commuting), so having a hall within walking distance from the university would be great!
I’m generally friendly, a little introverted, I want a decent amount of social life and yet am definitely not up for alcohol/clubbing/active night life, and I don’t prefer somewhere which might be noisy 24/7 (even at night) since I’d like an environment which is ideal for studying

Does anyone have any recommendations/tips for me?? Any insights regarding accommodation at bristol would also be greatly appreciated!!

ps, does the university guarantee accommodation for international students since i literally have nowhere to live otherwise lol(??

Thanks a lot !!!
Hi! I'm a home applicant, I live a couple hours away from Bristol so I've visited the city a few times! Since you're firming bristol, you'll be guaranteed a place in their accommodation. I'd suggest your best bet in terms of proximity to the uni and your similar attitude to my own about clubbing ect, accommodation in the West Village would probably suit you best! It also depends on how much you're willing to spend on accommodation, the price difference between an ensuite and shared bathroom can be quite a lot. If you need any more help you can pm me

Details of Bristol's Accommodation Guarantee are here: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/accommodation/apply/guarantee/

Be sure to read the full details.
North village is a bus ride away and night out heavy so I wouldn't recommend.

East and west village are arguably walking distance. East village is mostly city centre and I don't know if it could be noisy at night, but they're mostly en suite I remember, and are newer buildings. Its less popular (I think) from the options so you have a good chance of getting it. West village is fairly popular and in a residential area but I remember mostly shared bathroom. Most are self catered.

Another thing to ask, since I’m an international student and not really familiar with university accommodation in the UK, are mixed gender flats a common thing now? My parents studied in the UK before and both of them stayed in single sex flats/halls. I’m not religious or anything but I’m not really comfortable around boys, especially when it comes to sharing bathrooms and such, so I’m considering to apply for a single sex flat, and yet will this affect my chances of socialising with people there? According to what I know, most students in single sex flats are internationals and i do want to make friends with more local people, and I’m not sure if I want to be surrounded by a lot of people who don’t share the same religion with me, since I assume most students staying there will be Muslim(?) I hope I don’t sound rude/whiny since moving to UK is such a great deal for me, thanks again!:smile:

There is the option to request a single sex flat, like any other profile, however they are the minority and likely only available at certain halls so will restrict options. Bristol also says somewhere on their website that these flats are nearly all international students. I've found it easy to socialise with students from other cultures/religions in my flat but I know some friends struggled due to language barriers (neither in single sex accom). Most of the time I don't see much of my flatmates and you will have your own private space away from people, especially if you want an ensuite. If you want an ensuite and all your options are ensuites, you will likely get one but this is dependent on how many other people want that same type of room in those same halls so nothing is definite. West Village or campus East Village accom sound best for you from all your posts but don't rule anything out at this stage. Look at reviews, number of rooms available etc and I'm happy to help with any other questions.
Also there are other reasons that people choose single sex flats besides you singling out Muslims. I would guess it is largely international students from more conservative backgrounds who haven't had much experience being around the opposite sex for whatever reason. In the end UoB has a diverse student population with a wide range of ethnicities and beliefs so any issues with interacting with people who aren't like you might mean this is not the university to attend and just a note that the UK does have a significant Muslim population itself, it's not just an international thing. And because I forgot to mention before single sex flats due to the demographic will likely be quieter, have a reduced nightlife scene and more focused on academics - but uni is a chance to challenge yourself and try new things so this might be beneficial but might not. Alternatively consider a quite flat profile.
