Classism at Durham

Hi, I’ve heard a lot online about working class, public school, and people of colour not enjoying their time at Durham- is the social aspect of the university bad? Is bullying common? I dont want to attend a university that I’ll be friendless at haha
Thanks in advance

Hello,

I completely understand where you're coming! When I first applied, all I heard was how bad it was for POC and working class students etc but I promise you those rumours are grossly exaggerated. While there is an issue of classism at Durham, it's not as bad as people make it out to be, and that's largely due to the student societies and college societies. Societies at Durham are endless, there are so many represented communities that you can join and find your people/people you click with like the 93% Club at Durham which represents people coming from a working class background and allows them to share their experiences and meet other people from working class backgrounds. You also have the Durham People of Colour Association, which represents all POC from all backgrounds at Durham and it's the perfect place to meet people from your community and other communities to socialise and have fun. The social aspect of Durham is amazing, there are so many different societies where you can meet likeminded people and also people that share common interests with you; If you're interested in knowing more about the different societies at Durham, and ones that interest you, have a look at the student union website linked below

I hope this information helps!

Not true. I'm a POC and am at Durham one of the rather posher colleges, I've had a fantastic time and would highly recommend it. There are some unfriendly people for sure - but that's everywhere. I am sure some people may not have had a good time and I completely understand that but people do exaggerate things online.
