Say dropped out of uni or took a gap year?

Sorry, if this is posted in the wrong bit but cv help seems to be closed. I have a cv query on behalf of someone. So,he has just left year 1 of a bsc econ course due to many factors but has applied through ucas and firmed/insured universities to start this September. He will still be doing economics and is looking at spring weeks etc.. but as he won't actually be a student at the new university ( when applying in August) I'm curious as to what to put on the cv? Is it easier to say gap year as opposed to dropped out? The spring weeks (GS/KMPG/Deloitte etc..) will be with a view to gaining summer internships 2024 so early planning seems essential. Any helpful advice would be appreciated.
He needs to show that he dropped out - not disclosing this if required, or saying something which is not true, can be instant dismissal. There is no harm in dropping out of a course in the first year. Lots of people do it.

Thanks for your reply. Would you just put 'September 2022-March 2023' for example? He'll be abroad until end of July ( travelling March- July)
