Which universities offer clearing for psychology courses including a year abroad 2023

I’m wondering which universities offer clearing places for undergraduate psychology course. I’ve applied to mostly unis in London, edgham and Surrey but I think I would like the experience of living out of London now. I would like courses that include a year abroad and preferably not too far from London maybe 40ish miles maximum . If anyone could help I’d really appreciate it!! (Also I would like there to be a bit of night life but not too much and quite diverse if possible. )

You say that you've "applied to mostly unis in London, edgham and Surrey". Have you received any offers? I assume you realise that you can't apply via Clearing whilst holding offers, so you'd need to decline those offers if you wanted to apply via Clearing?

Also, if you're thinking of going down that route, you don't need to wait for Clearing to open in July. You could apply via Extra right now (but again, not if you're currently holding any offers or awaiting any decisions).

There are currently seven universities which UCAS show as still accepting applications for Psychology with a Year Abroad:

University of Birmingham
University of East Anglia UEA
University of Kent
Queen Mary University of London
University of Essex
Swansea University
Aberystwyth University

Some of the above have several Psychology-related courses. You can see the full list here.

Note that just because UCAS lists them as still accepting applications, that's not always accurate as it relies on the universities telling UCAS once the course is closed to new applications, which they don't always do in a timely fashion. So do contact the universities directly to see if they are still taking applications (and to confirm that they're still taking applications from home students - assuming that's what you are).

Clearly several of these don't meet your "preferably not too far from London maybe 40ish miles maximum" criterion. I'm sure you can filter those out yourself.

Hi there

I will link to you the Psychology course at the uni of Kent. If you use the drop down bar where it says options you can view the range of psychology degrees including a year abroad or a placement year. The uni of Kent has a lovely campus which is located around a 45 minute train journey from London. I'm in my final year of my psych degree at Kent so i'm hoping that I can give you a bit of an insight as to what it's like. I would say there is a good balance of night life here. There is an on campus club called The Venue and the in town I would say there are around 5 main clubs (these range from 3 floored ones to smaller bar/dance floor style clubs. My personal favourite thing about the nightlife in Canterbury is the number of independent bars/pubs. There are endless ones to explore, each with their own unique theme/vibe. In terms of diversity, I would say that Kent is very diverse in comparison to other UK unis. A large percentage of our students are internationals as we have campuses in various countries. There are also a number of societies all of which promote diversity, inclusivity and creativity. I will also link below our EDI page so you can browse through it. Hope this gives you a rough idea of what its like. Please let me know if you have any other uni/Kent related questions.

Hello!

That's great to hear that you've applied for Surrey

Our undergraduate psychology course is carefully designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the discipline, along with specialised knowledge and practical experience. The course focuses on a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on application through research projects, lab work, and placement opportunities. As a student myself, I have had the opportunity to utilise our EEG labs for my dissertation and explore exciting technologies like VR headsets. Additionally, our university houses various labs, including the SBD lab (Surrey Brain and Development), which offers excellent networking opportunities and keeps you informed about the latest research advancements.

In terms of location, Guildford is conveniently situated approximately 30 miles southwest of London. This proximity makes it easy for day trips or occasional visits to the city. Guildford itself boasts a vibrant and diverse community, with a wide range of amenities including restaurants, cafes, and a bustling town centre. Our university campus also provides a lively student community and a wealth of extracurricular activities to get involved in.

While Guildford offers a lively nightlife scene, it may not match the same level of intensity found in London, which seems to align with your preferences.

I hope this information helps you in your decision-making process. I highly recommend visiting all the universities on your list to determine which one best suits your needs and aspirations

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help!

Best wishes,

Hi Yakira!

We at Swansea University offer clearing places for our psychology course, and we also offer a year abroad scheme within our psychology degree. The two hyperlinks should help give you all the information you will need.

The Year Abroad scheme is offered through the university's 'Go Global' initiative, with students previously going to Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Hong Kong, Denmark, Canada, Australia and the USA for their years abroad. On the website you will find the list of established partners that Swansea regularly sends psychology students to, as well as the contact details for those people running the scheme who will be able to give you much more information.

At Swansea, we have one of the most diverse university student communities, with students coming to Swansea from all over the world and from a wide variety of different backgrounds. We have won many awards for our work on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Whilst we may be more than 40 miles outside of London, Swansea could offer you the fresh new break that you never knew you needed, moving from city life to beautiful beaches and vast outside space. One of the key selling points of Swansea is its beautiful surroundings, really making it the best place to study and live. For example, with the Mumbles and Gower Peninsula right on our doorstep. We also have a direct train from London to Swansea, making visits back to London really easy, as well as great rail connections to other cities such as Cardiff, Wales' Capital City, Manchester and many more.

The night life in Swansea is great, with the notorious 'Wind Street,' which has many bars/clubs/restaurants all on one long road for students to enjoy. There are also great places to go in Uplands and Mumbles, for example. Swansea has a great balance between activities involving alcohol and those without, meaning that there is never any pressure on students to drink if they do not want to.

Check out our content on Clearing/Foundation Years and Making Friends and Finding New Experiences for more information.

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any further questions.
