Clearance application & reference

I've got a bit of a dilemma. So I decided quite last minute I wanted to apply and go to university this year through clearing (given I missed the deadline). I've got all my grades etc. since I finished sixth form a couple years back.
My issue is that my referee - my tutor from my previous uni course I dropped out from - has just gone onto annual leave and thus hasn't given me a time they can do my reference by. I know that clearing can fill up quickly so I'm considering submitting my application without a reference but I'm also very concerned about doing this.
Any advice/information on this potential decision would be hugely appreciated
