Hello, just wondering what a pass at level 1 in Alan test means? Thank you.

The ALAN (Adult Literacy and Numeracy) test fell within the "Basic Skills" category of qualifications. The final date for certification of ALAN at Level 1-2 was 30 September 2013 - so it's been defunct for almost a decade now.

It was provided by Pearson / Edexcel as alternative to GCSEs. Learners could be awarded the Pearson Edexcel Level 1 Certificate in Adult Literacy and/or the Pearson Edexcel Level 1 Certificate in Adult Numeracy. (There were also Level 2 version of these qualifications.) You can find an out of date brochure for it here and archived pages from the old Excel web site here.

It terms of GCSE equivalence, a Pass at Level 1 is in the ballpark of grades 1-3 for English and Maths. (Obviously numerically-graded GCSEs never overlapped with the ALAN tests, so comparisons are not easy to make.
