Clearing UCAS

I plan to reapply to uni next year and go through clearing because my grades dont meet their usual entry requirments. When shall i create a UCAS account as i wont be directly applying? Also would i need a reference?

You cannot rely on the course / Uni you want being in Clearing next year - or that if it is, they will accept lower grades than usual.

It would be far better to apply to 5 realistic choices in the normal cycle now.
