That’s so cool! I was hoping to meet some people who might be on my course if you wanna trade socials?

sure 😊
Daughter has firmed Lancaster for Marketing after attending the March open day and loving the management school and the campus. Just wondering if there's a marketing / business Lancaster 2024 group / chat she could join? Or if these will be set up nearer the time, after results?

There is a Lancaster freshers group on facebook and a lot of student use that to then get added via group chats for certain subjects/college group chats. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LUFreshers/ this is the official one ran by the uni.

Ooh i've been looking at colleges and Lonsdale seems like my ideal! How long would you say the walk to the LEC is + what's the actual building condition like (e.g. is it one of the older or newer ones - i have crippling arachnophobia and happen to find a lott of harvest spiders in older buildings T^T) I prefer longer walks so i'd prefer to be a ways out but not actually sure how far away it is lol - alsoo is it a louder college + whats the 'bar' there like? Thanks so much! - Alix

Lonsdale to the LEC, if you going the road route, maybe 10 mins? If you join the south spine at pendle and walk through perhaps 12, maybe 15 at leisurely pace. We did a walk around last year with daughter and did the woodland walk and went down to Lonsdale. For spiders definitely have things like citronella essential oil spray. Also one of those grabbers as well so you can be at long distance in case you need to get rid of a stray one. Daughter she was in grizedale townhouse floor above the living room and didnt have an issue with spiders in the room, but shes a neat freak and hates dust and had the trusted wilko wipes so I suppose that helped lol.

Does Lancaster have a spider problem / increased amount of spiders in their buildings compared to normal amounts elsewhere??

Hello!
I lived in County townhouses in my first year and don't remember seeing a single spider the whole year! The rooms are very spacious and clean! if you keep your room tidy you shouldn't have a spider problem!

I wouldnt say Lancaster have more or less spiders than anyone else really as the climate is only slightly cooler than the south by not very much. I guess its down to how clean your rooms are. A dusty room is going to have more chance of spiders, so keeping your room vaccumed once a week and having some wipes with a spray or essential oil that spiders do not like will help keep them at bay. I have done the woodland walk and didnt see any spiders, although I wasnt purposely looking out for them though. As Lucy says she was in a county townhouse and had no issues either. I stayed in a bowland main when daughter stayed in the summer so she could work, and she didnt come across spiders there either.
Obviously no-one in any university can guarantee you wont see a spider, but as long as you keep your room clean, you have less of a chance them being around.

Hi Anon,

I actually saw very few spiders when I was in first year accommodation, definitely way less than when I was at home (West Midlands) however I have no clue if I just got lucky or if it's a trend across the buildings. My parents actually got me a bug catcher when I went to university because I'm such a wuss with spiders. It's a low powered vacuum with a long tube and you can gently suck up any unwanted insect creatures and dump them out of the window/door - highly recommend for anyone who has to get a family member to deal with it usually!

I'm pretty sure this isn't an official link - it's a bit porny and unregulated 😲

hmm it was regulated when daughter was on it. They got added from there to whatsapp groups. they do have a social media directory, but thats more for subject groups and college groups https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/current-staff/communications-and-marketing/communications/social-media/social-media-directory/

Hi!
As others have said depending on where your flat is within the college the walk to LEC is probably 10-15 minutes. Lonsdale definitely does give you that separation from the main campus which I enjoyed. The buildings are some of the newer ones on campus, Alexandra Park (south west campus) was built in around 2004. I think the shared kitchen/living spaces have also been renovated recently. Lonsdale does have more of a reputation as a 'party' college than some of the others but personally I didn't really notice that, I think it's probably very dependent on the individual flat you end up in. I didn't ever have a problem with noise at night although being on the top floor probably helped with that. To be honest, Lonsdale bar isn't the greatest one on campus, I've normally found it quite quiet outside of freshers and other events. It does mean that it's easy to get a pool table whenever you want one. For busier bars/socials we normally went to Grizedale, Pendle, Furness or Cartmel.
Hope that helps,
Becky (Lancaster university student ambassador)
