University open days, some info please

hi

currently i am unsure as to exactly which course i wish to do at university. I know I want to go into engineering but haven't yet made a decision as to which type of engineering/which course i would like to do.

I have very much considered a general engineering course, which would be perfect, but am well aware as to the limitations on university choice I will have for that course.

so the problem i have is i want to aim high, to go to a university renowned for the course i eventually decide to do, but i don't know what to do about open days. obviously i will want to visit the university before i apply, but because essentially i don't know which i would like to go to i am unsure as to how many/which open days to go to.

currently @ AS level i take the 3 sciences, maths and f. maths and *think* 5A's is a possibility. I have plenty of work shadowing placements organised for varying fields of engineering also.

i have considered the following universities, cam, bristol, bath, imperial, durham, warwick (but having done some research the last 2 aren't really renowned for their engineering).

is it a good idea to go to all their open days? hopefully once i have finished all my placements i will have a concrete idea about which course i want to do - but until then i presume it's a good idea to attend the open days of all the universities i'm considering.

sorry for the wall of text :P i'm really looking forward to some helpful information/advice from people who were/are in a similar situation.

many thanks
mitch.

I'd say Southampton over Warwick or Bath for any sort of Engineering. Do you know if you want to do Macro or Micro Engineering. Also Cambridge is General Engineering but if you apply as a specific engineer then it makes no difference, they take your interest in your discipline into account.

i'd really like to go read engineering at cambridge as the course is really well suited to my situation. i'm just wondering how i can tailor a personal statement to justify my decision to apply for general engineering, as well as specialised courses. the problem i have, as mentioned, is that so few "good" universities offer the general course, so i'll need to apply for other courses too.

also i'm unsure as to whether to do macro/micro engineering. I presume macro engineering is large scale projects etc. ? and micro is the opposite?

Macro is large like civil, mechanical, aero and micro is electronic, nanotech stuff. Not sure where systems lies in that. You can say that you are interested in engineering, how you find all of it so fascinating that you would rather study it as a whole before deciding what to speicalise in.

How could I word a personal statement if applying to a general engineering course in amongst other specialised courses? I see what you're saying, and agree with it, about general engineering but the dilemma i face is applying to other specialised courses.

May I ask how you worded your ps (just a sort of overview) as you applied to a general and specialised course?

thanks

Ah I see, as I've said before they know people will apply with a specific engineering discipline in mind. I applied as a Civil Engineer, I started of saying how much I enjoy and am fascinated by engineering, then went on to say why Civil specifically. If you apply for a specific course then tailor your PS to that course, in the SAQ (not sure if they will still have that next year), thats another form to fill out for Cambridge, they ask you is there anything you want to tell them specifically. Don't contradict your PS in anyway, rather say how you really enjoy engineering as a subject and want the oppurtunity to learn about all the engineering disciplines before specialising, which you eventually have to do.

You don't have to use any of this I'm just giving you my advice on how I applied.

no, it's really helpful to hear from someone who was in the same situation, i've been fretting over how to tailor a ps for a while now. thanks again for your replies azhao

still looking for some input on open days too ^^

I didn't go to any of open days, only Cambridge seeing as I was focusing on trying to go there and trying to force myself into a "Cambridge or bust" mindset, wonder what would have happened if I'd got rejected. Go to the ones which are near and that you don't mind going to, what specific engineering are you applying for?

PS. I wasn't really in the same situation seeing as I always wanted to do Civil.

I went to 8 open days to get down to my 5 choices. I didn't want to waste an application on somewhere I hadn't seen and may end up not liking. It paid off as one of my 8 on paper/website etc I thought i would really like, I ended up hating on seeing it in the flesh.
So I'd say go to as many as you can.

If i could just let everyone know where I stand so I might get some more opinions.

At GCSE I got 4A*s 8As, AS I'm taking the 3 sciences, Maths and F. Maths, and think I might be good for 5 A's. I intend on dropping biology and carrying on the rest to A2.

I'm gaining volunteer hours currently, and have placements lined up in various fields of engineering, in the hope I will have a concrete as to what I want to do @ Uni.

I have applied to an engineering summer school, and am looking into further extra-curricular options I may be able to take advantage of. Currently needing to send off my award book for my bronze DOE award, and will hopefully be well on my way to getting the silver during applications to uni. I've also represented GB in my chosen sport. I'm also going to attempt to work my way through the Cambridge recommended reading selection for engineering.

I feel confident my references will be good as I am a hard working person with a seemingly good relationship with all my teachers.

Based on this, are my university open day choices realistic? These are places I would definitely consider applying to, but at present some I am unsure about which course I would like to do.

Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Imperial, Southampton, Warwick possibly Durham, Sheffield and Loughborough

Really appreciate some input

thanks
Mitch.

Warwick isnt for you. You seem to actually want to be engineer and Warwicks course is for some strange type of people who are not proper engineers  Listening to you, Id more easily imagine you at Durham tbh (which I dont like but...). I think it should be five of those 6 six unis with Durham (who offer general eng...) and without Warwick. We are also quite good for any sort of engineering but I cant imagine you studying at Lufbra tbh  I think your choices are pretty fair with all this impressive background and grades, just dont go to Warwick and waste your engineering career ;] Good luck

cheers for that alexy .. will have a more in-depth look @ the warwick course!

Apart from General Engineering at Cam, what other courses are you applying for?

Hi azhao, I will almost certainly be applying for a general engineering/sciences course at oxbridge. I will also likely be applying for the general engineering course at Durham. Other than these I am unsure about the rest of my choices. I will definitely take the full 5 choices, 2 of them being the above. I hope by the time I complete my work shadowing placements I will have a more concrete idea about what I want to do, which I'll then select from the previously mentioned universities, hopefully imperial will be included too.
I've heard Southampton is really good for engineering...you could mark that as one our your prospective unis.....
