national insurance number... how do i get one?

hey everyone. i just receive a letter from student finance, in there its a declaration that i have to sign.

it also says something like i must give them my national insurance (NI) number or i wont get paid.

however, i have read it somewhere that the SLC will arrange the NI number for me, so what do i need to do to apply for a national insurance number???

You normally get sent one a few months before you turn 16, but if you haven't got one/lost it you should look here:

Pretty sure you get one if you are a UK resident when you are born.

Call this number 0845 915 7006 between 8:30 and 5pm

It is the number for HMRC. They can tell you whether you have a national insurance number. You should, most people get one sent to them just before they are 16. If you do but have lost it, they will send you a letter with it on (they can't tell you it over the phone).

It might be the case that yours is not activated (this was the case for me), they then send you a form which you fill in all your details on and send back. Whole process takes about 2-3 weeks.

It is for a lost or forgotten NI number, but they will be able to send out the form if yours isn't activated.
