Kingston Uni??

I've applied to five unis for next year and Kingston is one of them.
I'm looking to do a degree in Geography.
I'm just wondering guys and girls whats it like there? Nightlife? Student union?
Campus? Halls of residence? Kingston upon Thames?
Views from current or former students would be appreciated thanks.

Heyy, Im not doing Geography so I can't answer questions about that but I'm in my first year and in halls.

I live in Clayhill which is pretty good..rooms are decent sizes and they are all en-suite..£107.50 a week. There are rooms without en-suite though, depends what you want to live in really. There should be virtual tours of the rooms on the uni website.

The night life is pretty good, Oceana is really good..student nights are mondays and wednesdays, but if you go to Hippodrome on fridays the drinks are usually pretty cheap. Alot of people seem to like Mccluskys..never been so I can't really say.

Kingston in general is a nice place, plenty of shops and stuff to do, and if you're really bored London is only 20/25 minutes away on the train. Depending which halls you live in you could end up living in Kingston or Surbiton. Clayhill and Seething Wells are in Surbiton, its not far from Kingston you can walk to uni from Clayhill within about 10/15 minutes, depending how fast you walk.

If there's anything else you specifically want to know, let me know.

I've heard a lot of bad reviews on Kingston, is it true that people don't mix and segregate each other according to race? I've also heard that the nightlife is better than the quality of teaching which is said to be poor. Apparently a lot of people who go there seem to be those that don't take their work seriosuly as its easy to get into?

Well I can't speak for everyone on how seriously they take their work, but personally I take mine seriously...whats the point in being at uni if you're not going to? Surely there are people at every uni who do and don't take it seriously.

As for the race thing, I haven't had any problems speaking to people who are a different race etc, but yet again it depends how willing you are yourself to try and speak to other people.

As for the teaching, I can't complain, but you also have to realise at uni you're not going to get everything you need to know handed to you on a plate you actually have to teach youself some things and do some research, I think you get a decent knowledge of the important things, and then you learn more or not, depending how bothered you are I suppose.

In general im quite happy here. Anything else you want to know? Also what would you study?

I do Primary Education at Kingston University so any questions, feel free to ask away!
I have no issue with the teaching at the uni, and for this particular course, kingston is ranked 3rd in the country so you get a pretty good idea about how well the course is run. Yeah it has its negatives, sometimes aspects of the course seems unprepared and unorganised, but you are going to get that wherever you go!

cool  do you have to specialise in an age range or subject? also how often and how long are lectures, and how many days of the week do you visit schools?

Where else did you apply for this course?

Yes I specialise in History and Geography and the age range for the course at Kingston is 5-11 years. Lectures are usually 4 days a week.. you'l get one whole day off and then usually you do 2 full days 9-4 and then 2 half days either morning or afternoon. Placements are in blocks. In the first year you will have a week in october, a week in january and then a 3 week block in march time. 2nd year its a one week prep week in december and an 8 week block in january and then in year 3 its a 12 week block.

There are loads of opportunities to do extra placements in year 2, you can do a nursery placement and a special needs placement; and there is also opportunity to do your 8 week block in a school abroad. I have friends who are going to spain in january!

I also applied at Winchester, Chichester and Canterbury Christ Church.

sounds good  when did you choose to specialise in your subjects? is this after you've started the course?

I chose before i started the course but I believe theyve changed it this year. I think you still have to specialise before you start but you dont do any specialism until the 2nd year.
What are you looking to specilise in?

I'm doing a degree in Geography. I won't answer the stuff about nightlife and that as that has been already answered and it's accurate. I'm in my final year now, the teaching in the Geography department has been largely excellent. We've been to fieldtrips to Isle of Wight, Swansea, Germany, Malta, and this year some people are going to Morocco (I chose not to for financial reasons...it is the only fieldtrip we pay out of our own pockets :colondollar:). Those fieldtrips have been pretty enjoyable. :yep: Any other questions about the course...just ask.

Is this applicable for most primary education courses then (the fact that you have to specialise?) most of the courses have the title 'primary education with qts' without stating a specialist subject...
I think some of the universities let you specialise in the 2nd year without you having to make the decision at the application process. I remember Canterbury asking what age range i wanted to focus on at interview but i dont remember giving them a subject choice! I think its at the universities' discression. If they dont specify the specialisms on their websites then i wouldnt worry too much. Kingston had different course codes for their specialisms and so did Winchester.

sorry i forgot to quote you!
I don't go there but I live nearby and the general area and nightlife in Kingston is good - it's where people in my town go to go clubbing and we go shopping there if we want a proper shopping spree as they have more shops than in my town.

It's also really easy to get into London and has good public transport.
What's the music scene like there? Will I be able to go to gigs and stuff? I've got a place and I'm definitely going I just want to know whether or not I'll be able to go to some ****ty gigs or some clubs that aren't just R&B bull****.

I've been given an offer by Kingston too so thanks for making this topic; everything seems decent from what you've said.

Zavier; you're about 20 minutes from London so you can get to gigs with ease.

Hello!

What are your thoughts on the university and the course now that it's been 3 years since you studied there?
I want to study early years or primary teaching, but I've read that Kingston is not accredited! Is it true? One of the reasons why I want to be a teacher is because I love to travel and I speak Spanish, German and English and I could work in a lot of different places, but I won't be able to do so if my degree is unaccredited, no? :s-smilie:

thank you and merry Christmas!
