Noooo!!! So close! I saw 'Maths' and was thinking 'Yes! Finally another Maths Bsc/MMath student!' - and then I saw it was a Dual Honors. One day... One day I'll find someone on here starting pure maths.

But yeah. I've firmed my unconditional for Maths and will most likely be applying to the newly built accommodation. Ffern Penglais or whatever it's called. It looks ridiculously nice, and people here who visited it on visiting days have said it's even better than in the pictures online

I've heard multiple times to avoid Penbryn, despite the catered food being apparently nice.

i think the new place is too expenive, i mean yeah it looks really nice and everything but i can't afford it :frown:
Don't forget you get £400 accommodation bursary if you firm Aber. They take it off your first years rent.

yeah, but its still really expensive:frown:
Yes, it's still pricey but it really is top end and brand new. Have you looked at PJM? The little houses are nice and the rooms are a decent size.

ive looked at it but i prefer trefloyne because you have the wash basin in the room with you and the toilet, bath and shower are all separate.

are you thinking of going to aberystwyth?
Aber is my insurance. Also my sister goes there and loves it, never wants to come home for holidays!

I think the Penglais Farm is comparable with other Unis when you look at cost. It's brand new (you even have a dishwasher in the kitchen) and have to say, when I did the tour on a recent applicant day, looks better than it does in the photos online. I was impressed.

PJM is good value IMO. There are 2 bathrooms to share between 5/6 people, one with a shower the other with a bath. The rooms are a good size and there is a community feel to PJM (perhaps better suited to 2nd/3rd years, rather than freshers). Cwrt Mawr would seem to be a mixed bag - depending on whether or not you end up in a refurbished block. Rosser en suites are a bit on the snug side.

Overall the accommodation provision at Aber is pretty good compared to most other Unis, especially when you take into account that most people continue in halls for 2nd/3rd years and you are not left trying to sort private sector accommodation, with all the problems that can bring.
I've heard multiple times to avoid Penbryn, despite the catered food being apparently nice.

Penbryn is in fact dire, unless you really want catered. God knows why the Uni insist on doing tours of their worst accommodation on offer on Open Days! Perhaps they are trying to push the idea of catered accommodation and if you look at the price, if you can't cook, it may be a good option.

The restaurant at TaMed great.....you don't need to be a catered student to use it, and if you have money on an Aber card, you will get a discount anyway. The food there is really high quality for what you pay.

As Aber is my insurance, I will be applying for accommodation in April and my preferences will probably be Trefloyne, Rosser, PJM and Cwrt Mawr. Penglais Farm is just too much in rent for my budget but if I could afford it, would be top of the list. If Aber were my firm, and I would then get £400 off my first year of rent due to the bursary, I would put it down as first choice. It really is that nice - the photos on the website don't do it justice.

I'm really not that fussed if I'm honest about getting my firm or insurance - I liked both Unis and would be happy to go to Aber if it comes down to that. The decision on firm or insurance was a close call for me.

Can't tell you much about Trefloyne other than to check out the videos on YouTube but I think it is similar to most of the other on campus stuff. My sister was in Cwrt Mawr and is now at PJM - Cwrt Mawr was a bit grotty in her block but it hadn't been refurbed - some of the others I saw had, and there was a big difference. Hardly fair when you are all paying the same rent. The house she is now in on PJM is great and the rent is very reasonable but she's going to be in Penglais Farm next year - she is looking forward to the luxury of a flat screen telly and a dishwasher. I can honestly say this is the best quality student accommodation I have seen on all the campus tours I have done (been to a few for me and big sis).

Aber is really good these days for accommodation provision and all first years are guaranteed something. This is not the case everywhere by any means. The £400 bursary is an added bonus and the fact that you don't need to live out in private rented for 2nd/3rd years is one less thing to worry about when you get there. You can even transfer your holding deposit from year to year.

Got me wondering now why I didn't firm Aber!!

Yo I'm living in Penbryn right now, and it's honestly not as bad as everyone keeps saying. It's the oldest residence on campus, and yeah it could do with some love and care, but it's definitely great if you like to be social. It really all depends on who you live with, your house/flatmates literally make your experience. And with Penbryn having at least 15-20+ flatmates you'll definitely have people to party with. The rooms are much bigger than I expected, and you get some great views if you face the sea, but I suppose if you guys want to apply somewhere else that's good too.

I absolutely love Trefloyne. Not a lot of people know about it tho so on nights out if people ask where I live, they never actually know where it is. It's very close to the Student Union as well. The flats consist of 7 people, it has a wet room shower, a little toilet room, and a toilet/bath tub room. The kitchens are nice, they have a lot of cupboards and shelving so its easy to fit everyones stuff in. They also come with leather sofas which are nice and have a fairly modern feel to them. I'm on the ground floor so the only issue I have is smokers outside my window being noisy and how cold it is, other than that it's a really nice place to live:smile:
I was thinking of Rosser for accommodation, anyone care to share information on this .

Plus whats aber like as a place to live , i loved it when I visited , was wondering if anyone who is living there could share some light:smile:

I also got an unconditional for ABER To study History

Good luck everyone with exams hope to see you in September

congrats! I have an unconditional for English, though I achieved this with a merit award through the scholarship programme thingy.
I haven't personally seen rosser, only fferm penglais, but I have done extensive research on all of them and can say rosser seems okay, if an ensuite is important to you. It's battling with cwrt mawr for first choice personally! The ensuite seems very basic but hands down beats flip flops and communal showers and loos... I can't imagine what the other non ensuite flats do when they're all hungover with only a couple of loos! rosser is a single bed, has a sink a desk and an average wardrobe. There doesn't seem to be much storage but To be fair I'm a girl and I love clothes! If I go for rosser it'll be purely for the ensuite advantage over cwrt mawr and I'll have to take some extra boxes and stuff. Also, I've heard that rosser flats tend to socialise less with other flats as there's no large communal landing type area for everyone to congregate but that doesn't seem to be a huge issue. There's plenty of space in aber, right? The photos on the website show it has brick walls which I imagine need some homely decor to brighten up a bit! Cwrt mawr rooms seem a bit nicer and they are significantly cheaper. Is rosser your ideal choice?
