Probably talking about A^, which is A* with distinction in AQA Certificate Further Maths.
Could have been a new GCSE paper - if they're in the year below you - a grade 9 is supposedly A**
I did this GCSE AQA level 1 Further Maths thing last year and you could get A**'s
