I appreciate that this question is probably the most asked question on tsr, but please take my case individually and give me some advice. I'm not here to brag about my results, I just want a fair judgement from others who may know more than me. I'd really love too to Oxford to study physics. I got 7A*s 3As and a B plus an A in the FSMQ additional maths (highest grade possible is an A). Now I'd like to know whether these grades are below average, average or above average for firstly an Oxbridge applicant and secondly an Oxbridge physics applicant, and would the B hinder my application? Thanks a lot in advance
'There are no formal requirements for performance at GCSE; the majority of successful candidates have between 4 and 9 A* grades at GCSE, but it is not unusual for candidates to be accepted with fewer than 4 A* grades, or to be rejected with more than 9 A* grades.'
So yes, you have a chance (based solely on your GCSEs) and if you keep up the good work at A-level, the course should be definitely within your reach.

Yes your GCSE's are good enough. However without great a-levels, good admissions test performance, rock solid personal statement and top interview performance you wont get in. People getting their GCSE's seem way to interested in whether their GCSE's are good enough for a particular uni when there is so much more work to be done.
No the B will not hinder you application, it will be the same or better that if the B wasn't there at all.
As far as I'm aware Oxford use a % of A* system, so having a B grade is in fact worse than not having it. Not saying that it will make a difference overall tho

Yes I definitely understand that GCSEs aren't all, for sure! I was just making sure that say I got fantastic A levels, PAT score and a good interview, that my GCSES wouldn't be a hindrance. Thank you for your help
I would but Cambridge do Natural Science rather than physics and I wouldn't really want to do that
Oh, well you do have 7A*s which is in between the boundary of average GCSEs for your subject, so if you want to go to Oxford, I don't see why your GCSEs would hinder your application.

Yeah I've heard of that, I got the B in year 10 doing English literature which is quite unrelated. Would that affect it at all?

No they wont be. Just don't underestimate the difficulty in achieving what you've just mentioned, its far from guaranteed. Congrats on your results and enjoy the rest of your summer

That's nice to hear, and yep I won't underestimate it, I'll definitely be working hard towards that. Thanks for the help ! 😊
Hi sorry I have a question. I want to apply to Cambridge Law and I got an A for maths (100%), politics (99%), and for econ (89%), but got a low B for history (71%). I'm wondering if this would hinder my chances as I know that history is a traditional subject and generally favoured by universities. Thank you 😄
