I have to say - I am really concerned with some of the stuff I've read on here!!
Firstly: All undergraduate initial teacher education degrees are changing in Scotland bar one of them at Stirling and another at Edinburgh.
There is NO DIFFERENCE between the new MA and BA. Older universities have the privilege of calling it an 'MA'. It equates to the exact same as the BA.
***The BEd is in fact one of the most known and highly recommended degrees to study education globally. All BEd degrees are phasing out of Scottish education (except the specialist one at Stirling and Edinburgh) because of the Donaldson recommendation. They are being replaced by different degrees across the country. This will give more breadth in the quality and experiences that ITE in Scotland offers. (As well as the PGDE, which is not changing).
In relation to an earlier comment by a Student. Strathclyde is the sector leading university for Education in Scotland. (Regardless of what a league table says - which is likely not reliable). It is an outstanding establishment. Academic staff are the best in the country. See 'Scottish Education Beyond Devolution '3rd edition' by Bryce & Humes. The majority of authors in it are Strathclyde academic staff.
The 5 weeks placement in 1st year is not so. It is 4 weeks block placement with 1 week as induction days throughout the year. You are also given an intense amount of pedagogy practice and learning. At strathclyde you recieve the most Language input than any other initial teacher educaion establishment in Scotland. Strathclyde also has the largest education library in Scotland. It is also the only ITE institution that has a curricular resources centre in Scotland.
The degree at Strathclyde pushes you enormously and it is for that reason that it has an outstanding reputation both nationally and internationally. It has a rich historic and vibrant history, the basis and foundations at Strathclyde (formerly Jordanhill College of Education) was the first teacher training establishment in Europe. There is a wealth of experience there which also makes it unique. Further, the students work extremely hard at Strathclyde and are involved in many CPD opportunities to further their learning. Strathclyde produces outstanding teachers.
I would like to suggest that people not refer here for solid information when choosing their university. Please contact university academics/ do your research. These forums are not always reliable. Hope some of this helps!
