Except Oxford Brookes is actually better than quite a few "traditional" unis

What, like Queen Mary? Yeah, maybe . . . :p:

At least make university study infinitely better!? Oh-oh someone went to a poly . . .

I think it's terrible at any earlier level, but as I say, the range of courses at least make university study infinitely better.

Here. I have altered the bold for you, to indicate how the phrase was supposed to be read.

Yes. Yes they would have, but it's a bit late for that now. :p:

Here. I have altered it for you; to indicate how a half-decent grammarian would have wrote it.

Thank you.

My pleasure.
I could have gone to a more prestigous university, I got into Cardiff and Southampton, but I didn't like them as much as Plymouth. It may be a polytechnic, but I love it and it was the best choice I've ever made

You don't know what 'vocational' and 'course' mean? 'University' education for you.

oh please don't be so stupid. It is evident from my posts that followed I wasn't aware of what a vocational course entailed.

Grow up.
I got BCC at A level, which whilst isn't particularly amazing (I could have done better but hated school so much that I bunked off a lot), doesn't mean I'm completely thick. So maybe I should be doing a vocational course rather than attending an ex-poly, but I wanted to do a geography degree at a liberal, friendly university that not only accepted my grades but is the only modern university to be named university of the year by the times. So here I am at Brighton, and I wouldn't go anywhere else if you paid me.

Shouldn't that have been written?
To be fair, people shouldn't slag off polytechnics - my grandfather told me they were the only places you could study sciences outside of Cambridge when he was a lad.

At the same time, I feel some distinction should be made between vocational degrees and institutions - that is to say, ones focused on employment at the end of it - as opposed to ones for purely academic research. Then they could be regarded on the individual merits of both types of education, as well as offering something more suitable to people's individual talents, rather than having a one-size-fits-all system that causes ridiculous amounts of prejudice and confusion.

(That having been said, someone rightly pointed out that degrees such as medicine and dentistry were technically vocational - but could a distinction not be made between training as a doctor, and becoming a medical researcher? There would be overlap, but there would be a different focus, and therefore different end-results.)
I'm an ex Kingston poly student from 1984-87. I went there because I failed to get a place to study Physiotherapy, and there wasn't enough time left to apply to UCCA (old name for UCAS). The poly took me willingly with CDE, in fact I turned out to be one of the higher qualified candidates. I worked hard and ended up with a 2i, which I was told had to be remarked because I was so close to the border of a 1st.

My A level results were low because I had glandular fever during my course, and more importantly I failed to revise enough for the final exams. I had ABC for my mock A levels, and I thought that because there was no new coursework between the mocks and the finals, I would be OK on minimal revision. How wrong I was. Let that be a lesson to those about to take their A levels. In those days all your marks were on the final exams - no assessed coursework, which makes it much more difficult to get high grades.

So, I have lowish A level results, does that make me a bad candidate for taking a degree? or might I have learn't my lesson. The poly was willing to take a chance on me, for which I am eternally grateful.

I went on to get a well paid job in computing for 10 years until I had my kids. Now having run my own sewing business for 10 years, I am ready to go back to more study. I have a place at Plymouth to study Podiatry. Another ex poly I believe, but I am more than happy to go there.

I think that polys had their place, teaching more "applied" subjects, and giving people a second chance, but after all it's only a name. I'd have been just as happy with a university who offered the same type of "applied" courses.

Queen Mary isn't even an ex-poly. Try harder :yep:

I don't think it was a good idea.
Pre-1992 you had Good universities and you had good Polytechnics (Trent, Brookes, Northumbria). The good polytechnics were recognised as good and stood out amongst its peer-institutions.

Now, post-1992 you don't have good polytechnics, you just have bad universities that are just looked upon as 'bad' becuase they are on a 'level playing field' with all other Red Brick, Plate Glass universities.

So I do not think it was good, as it has taken away a certain thing in the education system that was good.

You said 'some ex-poly universities are better than traditional universities', and I said 'What, like Queen Mary?'. The suggestion I put forth was that some traditional universities that were worse than some ex-polys included Queen Mary; I was saying that ex-polys are all turd but that Queen Mary is even turdier than some of them. Lern 2 reed plz, k thnx.
