Damn, it's a shame I didn't see this post before I went for interview!

I went for interview. Your college appears to be full of perverts. I was shown a guy's room where he insisted on showing me porn on his laptop. My interview rep (a first year called Patrick, he was in PG Halls, if you know him...) took me to lots of girls' rooms too. What else...? Oh yeah, we went to a JCR meeting where some people proudly told us about how they'd stolen Marilyn from Castle and climbed to the top of Castle and danced naked round the flagpole.

Yeah, your college is alright.

Got rejected by the department though. Damn them!

Aw, sorry to hear that! Also, sorry about the perversion - it's those damn freshers, they have waaay too much time and energy on their hands...

To assume the college is full of perverts from that limited experience seems a harsh generalisation. Also, with there being twice as many girls as lads in first year, there are more girls' rooms, and hence it's reasonable that a majority of rooms you visit were as such. The JCR meeting is as much about college spirit and sharing daft escapades or events as serious business. Perhaps the department was looking for people who look beyond what they are presented, and are willing to take an interest in what at first seems alien to them.
That's Hatfield for you...
Nah, to be honest, people getting drunk and naked isn't really that much of a rarity at any institute of higher education. I highly doubt that they managed to get onto the roof by the flagpole though, unless they had help from our college "flag". The door onto the roof is locked, and accessing it any other way is just plain stupid.

Don't take offence! You think I didn't like the place? It seemed to have a nice atmosphere.

And don't get thinking I'm bitter either, because I'm not.

Okey kokey, sorry for mis-interpreting the emphasis of the post.

Good combination! The History department is a roll out of bed distance and the Politics department only a five minute walk away!

I have applied to Hatfield on the basis of its position and website, not realising (skimy research its true) that its quite prestigious and competetive. What do the good people at Hatfield look for in applicants?

Same as all the other colleges in Durham - academic ability, but also extra-curricular interests and the ability to contribute to college life. Don't listen to any cracks certain individuals might make about a private education and daddy's platinum card - that part of the reputation is definitely not true!

As a life long state schooler in South West Durham but with my summers in Devon working alongside Public School students (or rather for them) I'm probably a biassed about the privately educated, is Durham full of them and are they as bad as rumours suggest? Do certain colledges not have specific interests eg swimming photography or football etc that endears certain applicants?
Am going to Hatfield 2006 to study history...anyone going to the 21/22 March open days?
