Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)

Scroll to see replies

I only decided for definite that I wanted to apply for Veterinary Medicine a few weeks ago. However, I think I have left it too late to get all the work experience in because I will struggle to meet the minimum of 10 weeks work experience requirement. So far what I have booked and have completed are:

1. An evening spent with a farmer in hope of lambing(didn't see any) but instead ended up observing the milking, learning about the newborn lambs and watched and got involved with the artificial insemination of a cow. I am hoping to spend several days with the same dairy farmer over a few weekends.

2. Spending my saturday mornings volunteering at an animal rescue centre for the forseeable future.

3.I have booked 2 weeks in a small animal veterinary practice, 1 week in a different small animal veterinary practice and 1 week in a large animal veterinary practice over the summer holidays.

4. I have contacted an abattoir for a day of work experience and am waiting to hear from them.

5. Hoping to visit a different farm in a few months to see them lambing.

Have I got a hope of getting any offers?

its good that you have decided what you are going to do now and its also good that you have started to book work experience. at the moment you dont seem to have done any equine work or have booked any and this is a must - also an equine vet practice. it might be an idea to look at your timetable and see if you have any afternoons or mornings free during the week to do some work experience at catteries, kennels or stables and doing this every week until you apply will up your work ex and show commitment. as long as you have the core work experience that is required and the grades you should be fine - just make sure that you contact places as soon as possible before they get booked up! i hope this has helped slightly! good luck

Is it a necessity to spend some time at a stables? I'm just wondering because I think almost everyone here seems to have w/e at a stables...

this is what i found when i looked at liverpool's requirement, btw im not applying to vet med but vet nursing but find it interesting to look at work experience requirements for future vets :P, :Candidates should have spent a minimum of 6 weeks gaining experience of the husbandry of a range of animals, on commercial livestock farms, in commercial stables and in commercial or rescue kennels / cattery. It is also beneficial to have gained experience in other veterinary-related sectors e.g. abattoirs, laboratories, zoos or wildlife centres. Candidates should also have completed at least 4 weeks in veterinary practice. As a minimum, experience should be gained in at least two different practices, preferably one small animal and one large animal (mainly farm / equine) practice.
i hope this answers your question

hugely depends where you apply- if you apply somewhere where you dont meet the minimum criteria then most likely you wont get in, but they dont all have the same minimum and some care less about work experience than others (most notably cambridge)
Hey guys started up a facebook page where me and some fellow vet students can offer you advice, you can meet other vet hopefuls and just chat about animals! Add us on http://www.facebook.com/groups/321094924605336/ Cheers!!

Hi there ! I'm a hopeful for Vetmed 2013 too ! I've done around 9 weeks work experience so far, but I was wondering if we need written references from each employer to prove we did the work experience ? As I haven't ever asked for one :s-smilie:

Thank you !

Hi there, I'm a 2012 applicant but took a detour to have a wee look here today

Don't worry about having left it too late, there is still plenty of time until the October 15th deadline, but I'd advise to have your application in a good few weeks before this just incase there's any last minute issues and then you have no time to sort it out. Also just as a general note of advice start your personal statement early and get it checked on the ps helper forum here, it's all private and the helpers are just that, SOOOO helpful. Oh and one last piece of general advice, make sure to write down all the hours you are doing (including dates) and keep notes, it'll make filling in any work experience forms and interviews so much easier.

Anyways, regarding work experience you're definitely on the right track. Farm work experience is very important, especially dairy and lambing, so stick with that dairy farmer until you have at least a week or two there. Make sure to book the lambing ASAP, find out exactly when the farmer will be lambing and try and get at least a week solid (it's not that far away and booking early is always helpful). 3 weeks is probably good for farm work if you're pushed for time.

Your plans for your vet shadowing sound good, I'd keep it at those 4 weeks unless you somehow have extra time during the summer. Someone said above to book an equine vet but I'd be tempted to think that the large animal practice will encompass equine work and so getting a further week there (rather than a small animal practice) if you have time would work.

The animal rescue centre sounds interesting and if it is mainly dogs and cats would count as kennels and cattery. Staying for the foreseeable future sounds like a plan and if you worked there for say the next 6months uninterrupted then you would have gained around 2weeks small animal work experience which is good.

The abattoir sounds like an interesting choice and would make your application stand out. It might be an idea to also get a day or two at a veterinary laboratory and/or something unique to your area or interests i.e. I'm very interested in wildlife so I spent a month in South Africa last year and also spent last Spring being involved in a local Osprey watch at a Scottish Wildlife Reserve. Other things could include pig farm, poultry, sea life sanctuary, aquarium, zoo or wildlife park etc. Aim for a week or so of "different", it'll open your eyes to new possibilities and really make your application stand out.

The only thing you haven't mentioned which is a must is stable experience. Definitely aim for a couple of weeks if you can. If you have a riding stable locally then that's perfect, if not other things you could do is find a racing stable or trekking centre (it really depends on your area).

If you have a mixture of long term during your school term and short term using all your summer holidays there is every chance you can get over 10 weeks work experience before the deadline and that it can be made up from a large variety of placements.

If not, don't panic! I'm on a gap year atm due to not having enough experience the first time around and the past couple of years of applying and having a gap year have been fantastic!

Anyways, hope this helps, feel free to ask any questions and good luck!

Wow...didn't realise until after I saw it posted I'd written quite the essay lol

It's always a helpful thing to have to back up the fact that you've been there, to have all the details of things you have done perhaps and also to show that you are enthusiastic, commited and all the other nice things they say  At both my interviews I was asked for references so definitely something to ask for, even from past placements, just phone them up and ask if they'd mind writing one for you. You don't need them for all placements that you've been to but having them is definitely beneficial I think
Hi everyone,

I'm in my first year at Liverpool and one of my friends has just made a new facebook group for all of you applying for 2013 entry. Hope to see you all on it!!

To those of you who've done abattoir stuff.. is it horrific?
I'm a vegetarian and I'm worried that I'll just cry all day and end up with PTSD if I go into an abattoir!
