They like the fact that their course is preclinical, and you get a BSc Hons. Whereas if you intercalate, I believe that you get an ordinary degree? They are also very proud of the science that they teach us, and our dissection! Also our facilities.. new building, custom built, smallish cohort (160ish students), nice atmosphere..

The usual!

Whilst I was semi-joking, I may in fact kiss you if I see you. Will you be touring that day? Please say yes

I haven't got the schedule yet, but even if I'm not officially touring, I'm usually around!

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but out of interest from people that know, which accommodation would be best for medics if I did decide to choose St Andrews? I would prefer self catered .

It depends on your budget! New hall is closest to med school and self catered.. a lot of medics there!

Thought this might be as on the website it looks different for next academic year. But this is good for those that live far right as it saves a trip to and from St Andrews between what was Xmas holiday and a reading week before exams right?

Where can we get a 'Howie' lab coat like it says on the website? And are the skeleton and Pocket mask optional or mandatory? And I assume we buy the red gowns when we arrive?

Cheers!

Well it depends, i prefer having 2 weeks revision before the exams :s-smilie: oh well at least now post christmas i can go traveling across UK again

Howie lab coat from the union, I dont own a howie, its all good. (literally brought my old one from home that I used in college)

Dissection kits and pocket masks can be bought from the medical school itself.
You dont need your own skeleton but it'll be cool to have on in the shower! haha But yeh there are tones of bones in the resource centre. But if you fancy a skeleton, why not.

Red gowns are entirely optional, you'll wear them rarely. Eg: opening ceremony, church, formal student events, tour guiding. I have one because its pretty gorgeous and its somewhat like fleece (useful when the radiator goes kaput)

I'd say, being a fresher, apply to new hall. Its £5665 (i think) for 2012/2013.
Currently being upgraded. The rooms are ensuite, kitchens are alright. Theres a music room which I'm TRYING to get fixed. the drumset and guitar is absolutely ****E of the highest order. The piano still works.

Theres a cafe open during the day. Porters are present 24/7. They usually keep track of mail/packages/hall maintenance (love them). Theres a new games room/common room now.

Lots of study space, computer room with printers. Heating is good (we got time extended).
Hall events are generally decent. Remembers FatSams night out with free booze, the carnage was unspeakable that night. :P Apart from max carnage, theres the usual movie screenings, whiskey tasting, nights out, Zumba, bub quizzes etc. Its a good community once you get settled in.
ps-no one minds when you walk around in your pajamas.
pss-near medical school (wake up 8.50 for 9.00am lectures)

I personally love being in Albany Park.. Its less like living in a travel lodge, and ok a 25 min walk, but it gives you a home/work separation! Otherwise it can be very claustraphobic.. Plus Albany is on the beach!
But you need financial reasons to stay here as its the cheapest...

Yeah just had a look at it online, remember seeing it on interview day too right next to Med school. En suite & self catered is all I ask so that sounds great  Thanks.

Not to mention the pier. Memories built on the pier last forever. Literally xx
Speaking of the pier, i haven't been there since before exams. This is shocking.
I'm wondering how the hell I'll ever afford accommodation, if I am lucky enough to get an offer. 5 and a half grand?! I get the absolute minimum maintenance loan, no grants etc.. does anyone have experience of juggling a part-time job along side doing a Medicine degree?

Cool, I'll be the one in pearls wearing a dress that makes me look Margaret Thatcher.

I have money issues and a couple of my friends work. I work as a nurse and do shifts in my holidays, or long weekends. I have tried to avoid working throughout term time, but if it comes to it, then I would work at the weekends. The uni dont like you to do more than 10 hours paid work a week, but if you have got to live, then you just have to get on with it. Time management is the key. Utilising all the time in the day when you are not in classes, then that leaves your weekends free. There is no reason why you cant do both!
Oh and Albany Park is half the price of New hall, and if you have financial difficulties, then you can apply here!

I have a friend who's in second year who works at the union bar in night shifts. It isn't recommended that you take up 2/3 jobs at once. The workload for medicine will gradually increase. I suggest looking for jobs under student union (supportive employers) The library may offer openings as well (unsure)

I'm exactly the same, I'm going to HAVE to get a job regardless of what accommodation I stay in (if I get an offer than is :P) I've been told be a medic in his third year (at another uni) that you can cope with a job in first year ok but beyond that it starts to build up and can get pretty hard though I don't know if that's relevant to all uni's or just that one

It's easy for the staff or people with financial backing to say that. I am a graduate, I have financial responsibilities from my previous life. I will need to work right through all 6 years of uni to pay for it! I will try and contain my working to the holidays. My priority is doing the best I can at uni, but I have to earn money so I can complete my course!

My dad's a communist scouser and my mum is a socialist from a small ex-mining village in the central belt ergo I am not allowed to forget her  My dad in particular is already planning the party for when she goes to the great conservative party conference in the sky... :colone:
