Nice extrapolation.

Yes, selling the dream right there!

I have had my new y12 AS group for 3 lessons. My initial observations:

All English speakers and completed a 2 year GCSE after Key Stage 3

22 in the group

9 have Bs

I expect 5 of those will make it to half term in 5 and a half weeks after mini exam

3-4 will get to C1 and through it

2-3 will get to C2 and through it

1 will do ok, the other will....well...do less ok

Then of course there are the A grade pupils

its ok  I cant do that my subjects are in blocks, also want to do media and ict because i got an A in them at gcse. It is it could get me in for primary school teaching can it not? you only need one strong subject i think. I dont know im quiet confused in what i want to be, maybe a journalism would be a good idea? since i like media but im not particularly good at English got a c in english and english lit. but always had my heart set on teaching , but im that confused i dont know what to do!
You really can't do Maths with Biology? I'm not sure how that works. Teaching is probably a more realistic career choice then journalism.

Uhhh with a B in GCSE Maths I would advise against A level, I recall a Sixth-Form Maths teacher on TSR who stated something along the lines of 'if you didnt get A* / high A at GCSE maths then according to statistic trends you'd be lucky to get a D at AS.'

:/ Don't quote me word for word however I shall summon thee.

That teacher is chatting bull****. This is the same kind of **** my maths teacher said to me, it just shows that they are too lazy to teach to be honest, i taught my self A level maths in a year and ended up with a B. Obviously the person in question has to be committed but i hate teachers who write people off like that.
I think AS Maths is far easier than A2 Maths but that's not to say AS Maths is easy.
I got an A in GCSE and an A in AS. I sat in lessons for 2 weeks of A2 and decided to drop it.

For me, AS Maths was pretty much doing every single past paper available on the internet (from 2004).
This amounted to something like 12 papers each for C1, C2 and S1 (I still have these if you want me to email you them -PM me).

I think if you're a hard worker, AS Maths shouldn't be a problem.
Believe me when I say I have no natural talent for any of my subjects...I just worked for them.

I'm afraid Michael Gove intends to raise the minimum requirement for Primary Teacher Training to GCSE Grade B in English. I don't want to be rude but, unless you are using a phone or are typing very quickly, your English really doesn't look good enough for Primary School teaching or journalism. Are you able to get any careers advice or guidance at school?

Thanks for the answers everyone! yea i was going through a hard time when i was sitting my n6, my dad was dignosed with cancer :frown: n4 module we only had 1 month to learn which wasnt enough and it was completly new! then n3 back in 4th year i got 145/147 only 2 marks off. I do love maths but im scared incase i'll struggle :frown: i want to change biology to maths because i think biology is way too hard! whats your opinions? also the alevels im doing is ict, media studies and health and social, and biology which i am thinking of changing. I want to be a primary school teacher and i need a strong subject to help me :frown: the degree requires AAB :frown:

Both Maths and Biology are pretty huge transitions from GCSE to A-Level. I'm studying them both for AS levels this year. If your school does Pure, Stats, Mechanics and Futher (Double) options, I'd advise to go for mechanics and stats as they have lower grade requirements which suggests to me that they're slightly easier.

Really sorry to hear about your dad, I'm sure that must of had a huge impact on your work and grades, so all I can really say is that it seems that if you are prepared to put in the effort, you should do fine at AS level, just make sure you enjoy doing it cos trust me.... AS level maths requires a lot of time and effort practicing and grasping new concepts!!

In terms of Biology, again its a huge step-up from GCSE. Everything in it requires a lot more specific detail than before but all it really needs is time and effort spent learning these new details. Unfortunately thats what all core A-Levels require.

Hope this helps!!

Maths and Biology are core subjects, in the top 5 hardest A-Levels you can probably chose in most schools... Universities love them! If you can do both together it proves that you're able to do a lot.

Thanks everyone. Guess then i may throw my dream of being a primary school teacher in the bin :/
I wouldn't give up that easily, but do try and get some advice from someone who really knows the ins and outs of that area.

Have you spoken to a careers adviser? My brother-in-law is a primary school teacher and I highly suspect that he wouldn't get an A in A-level Maths. Perhaps I have missed something? Entry requirements for Primary School aren't very high at some Universities, iirc. Your GCSE Maths grade is B, what is your GCSE English Literature/Language grade? You need a degree, but not in a specialised subject, and you need, I think, decent GCSE grades (grade B standard?) in Maths and English. You can retake GCSEs - but before you make any decisions about your future like this, it's probably best speaking to a professional careers adviser - see if your school/college offers one.

Should i do maths a-level if i got a b in maths gcse and statistics b?
i didn't do additional maths either,? :frown:

I got a B at GCSE Maths and didn't do a statistics GCSE.

I got an A at A level so it's definitely do-able... just make sure you put the work in and don't fall behind !

don't give up on your dream!
definitely go to careers advice and find out what the EXACT requirements are for teaching

but as for a-levels (this is my opinion, I'm no expert) I would take maths, biology (the two traditonal ones that unis will love) and then media and ICT (yes, media and ICT can be considered slightly 'soft' but if you love them and do well then what's the problem?)

good luck

I achieved a grade B at GCSE.

I went on to achieve a grade B at A-Level.

I then went on to achieve a first class (hon) at degree level.

Like someone has mentioned before its about your individual character in terms of how much effort you put in and the biggest thing someone else mentioned is whether you really enjoy maths or not.

It'll expand your thinking skills that'll help you in all aspects of life.

Maths = EPICNESS! :cool:
Did 3 modules in GCSE Maths, got B,A,A. Overall I got an A.

Took on board A Level Maths. Got an A*. Did Further Maths AS, got an A.

Did 9 Maths exams at A Level, got A's in them all and 90%+ in 5 of them.

Wouldn't hurt to try
