If you really want a job you will find one. Sorry I went through 5 years of University working my ass off whilst holding down a part-time job. I never had any respect for my fellow students who lived 100% off their parents or their loans. Debt after Uni is bad enough without wasting loans on alcohol etc. I always kept a job as "beer token" pennies.

I would have also felt a bit useless having to buy christmas gifts with money that I didn't earn.

Just my opinion.
Also more importantly employers like to see graduates with more than just academic qualifications.

Working in a bar at the weekends might not seem important now but it does show you have people skills, can work under pressure and would be willing to put in some hard graft.

I have had a job since i was 16 and generally quit them and got another for higher pay.

Ironically, i quit 2 and replaced 2 within a month while the UK was in recession but since February have not got one and this is my longest gap.

I am going to crack on and get another retail job next week however during university i plan to do as many political related things as possible for my future career.

Had done some events / student representation type things at uni, but didn't get a proper job until a few months ago (I'm 19). It was a struggle but now I couldn't go back to not working.
It doesn't matter if it's directly related to your career, part time jobs give you essential skills and improve your teamwork, communication and just help prepare you to deal with people and actually get on in life.

Especially for jobs involving dealing with clients / customers / service users, I'd imagine employers would much rather employ a person who's worked in customer facing roles in unrelated part time jobs for years than someone who's got a 1st but NO experience at dealing with people in a proffesional setting.
I think sometimes people are too quick to put down some jobs. For example I've heard the "I don't want to work weeekends" or "I'm not going to work late on a Saturday night".
There are jobs out there, it's just that even when it comes to part-time work some people are snobby towards them.
I know girls who would apply for retail jobs in Topshop for example and fail to get the jobs, however when Primark started hiring they quickly came up with excuses for not trying out.

I got my first job at 12, it was a blow job behind science block, was the greatest job i ever had and required no effort on my part, actually, undoing my fly was kinda difficult, those jeans, i hated them.

I'm 17 and have had about 3 jobs, currently waiting to hear back on another one. My parents don't give me any money, I have to buy and pay for everything myself. Its kind of annoying coming on here and seeing 20 year olds that have never had to have a job, clearly haven't had any hardships in life, sigh.

That really irritates me. I suspect I'll get negged for this and what not but who are you to judge how hard other people's lives are? At the risk of sounding patronising, I genuinely admire that you have had three jobs; there was a girl at my school who had four at one point, and I thought that was brilliant because she worked so hard, but that doesn't mean you have any right to judge other people solely on the fact that they don't have a job, because you don't know enough about their situation to do so.

I'm 18, almost 19, and I've never had a paid job (unless you count babysitting...) My parents are very generous, which is amazing of them, and I certainly don't expect them to be so; it just happens that they are. However, I've done non-paid work and volunteering since I was 11 (working at a local stables till I was 16, then working in a local theatre/with a local director and this summer volunteered at an art gallery). The fact that my parents are generous with their money does not mean I don't work hard (or that I've had an easy life)!

There is no excuse however if they decide to create you they are also responsible for your well being, until you can support yourself.

Not pathetic, everyone in this country is in the same situation.

Besides you're only 19 - you have your whole life ahead of you.
I've not had a proper job either. I don't live in my home country, so I'm ineligible to apply for work here :frown: don't worry about it though, you're not pathetic! You have more free time which can be wisely utilised in other ways

My personal opinion is that everybody, when legal, should have a job! I've been working since I was 15 and have developed so much from this!

It does not affect your education either. I am working 2 evenings a week, some weeks 3 evenings. I am still achieving A's and B's and C's in my A Levels!

Go out there are get a job. There are plenty going.... (REGARDLESS OF THE NEWSPAPER HEADLINES!)
