Looking for/to start a uni ice hockey team

Hi All,

does anyone at/going to any of the Glasgow unis play ice hockey?

If so, is it for a rec team, or is there a proper uni team? I'm looking to play while I'm up here (3 years experience with Bristol Lions unis team).

If not, would anyone be interested in trying to put together the bare bones of a team to play some hockey?

cheers

I've always wanted to, but I've got pronating ankles so skating's always been difficult for me. I can skate, but i tend to lose an edge an awful lot whenever I put any weight on either foot. So for the time being I'm going to start playing floorball again instead.

As far as I know there's only one or two recreational teams in the Glasgow area, and they're both out near Braehead.

I would love to play ice hockey.
I looked into finding a club for beginners or something but there wasn't anything I could see.

I was thinking about joining the Glasgow Cheiftans, but it looks quite serious. I just want a rec level dont-take-it-too-seriously group who I can socialise with and play some hockey - A beer league team essentially :P

If there was more interest Id be willing to speak to the uni to try and get the ball rolling. Every other major city has a BUIHA team which is usually joint across all the city's unis to make it more affordable. It would be a HUGE attraction to north and east european and north america students looking to study in the Glasgow, Braehead ice rink is awesome!

Not that I could find.
Braehead offer lessons, but they're only 15 minutes long, and nearly £10 a go.

You'll find that the problem in Glasgow (and Scotland in general) is the lack of rinks. There's just not enough of them to support a city Glasgow's size.
There are five main reccy teams that play out of Braehead Arena. These teams and their category by whether they are suitable for beginners or more serious players (based on the types of players already registered) are as follows:

Glasgow Grinders www.glasgowgrinders.co.uk (beginners)

Glasgow Chiefs www.glasgowchiefs.com (intermediate-good)

Paisley Panthers www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=paisleypanthers44 (intermediate-good)

Paisley Buccaneers www.srihc.com/paisley-buccaneers.html (intermediate-good)

Paisley Blackhawks http://www.paisleyblackhawks.com/ (good)

The season is coming to an end though and the ice has already been lifted at Braehead. The new season will begin again usually around end of September / beginning of October.

Hope this helps you guys
