I'm going to study history from year 2, undergraduate  did my first year at home. I guess you've applied for postgraduate?

And congrats on your offer!

Thanks! I'm taking the masters programme in Strategic Studies. Everything settled now, gov. loan and everything. I got my unconditional offer sometime before christmas, and made it unconditional around march. Getting accommodation fixed was sort of the last thing that needed to be done.

History rocks, I'm quite the history buff myself (starting to get a decent sized collection of books now).

Strategic studies? That's politics and military strategies etc?

History is much more interesting at university level than what it was at upper secondary

Have you been to Aber yet? How are you going to travel there?

Yeah, it's pretty much politics and the military, the relationship between them etc. I'm considering joining the historical society (unless its exclusively for history students). Wales must be a great place to study history, there's castles on every corner it seems. I'm definately going to Harlech, and hopefully Caernarfon and Conwy aswell.

I haven't been to Aber, I was invited for an open day, but by then I'd already recevied the unconditional offer and decided to go there. As I'm planning on staying there for 12 months, I figure I've got plenty of time to experience the place anyway.

I'm planning to travel from Oslo to Manchester, and take the train from there. I'm gonna hear with the accommodation office if I can arrive a bit earlier, they said they sometimes allow internationals to do that. If I can't, I'm considering leaving a few days earlier, and stay in Birmingham/Midlands or something for a day or two, and get on an early train from there on move-in day. Yourself?

(sorry for the late reply)

I doubt the history society is exclusively for history students. Apparently, if what I was told is correct when I visited the History department this spring, the history society is the one with the most members and the most active society in Aber. I'm considering joining both the history society and the debating society myself, and I think there's also an International Students society there if I remember correctly. Compared to the norwegian system of 'socialising' on the university campus I believe the british system seem to work much better, but then again I went to a very small university college where the uni. college itself is between two mid-sized cities (so no students actually live close to the college.)

Aber is absolutely gorgeous. I loved the place from the beginning of my stay there, which is one of the reasons why I chose Aberystwyth over Aberdeen and the other universities I had applied to

I was actually thinking of doing the same as you, going through Manchester and then to Aber, but on the same day. However, the plane tickets are too expensive for me on the 21st, so I'm going through London - Birmingham and then either by the Meet & Greet bus from the university or the train.

Cool, where did you study? I've been in Lillehammer myself the last 4 years, working there as a postman ATM - on a scooter, and in this crappy weather!?!

I'm considering going through London aswell if i decide to stay in Brum/shrewsbury for a day or two - let me know if you're gonna do the same, maybe we can join up. In any case I'll send you a PM with my e-mail.

I also prefer the britsh system, as there's more than grades that count when starting uni, such as your personal statement. And I've also got the impression that people are a lot more social when not at school. At my uni.col most people where quite often together after school, but the vast majority of it was drinking (which socials covers aswell ). I've got the impression that you get to cultivate your interests a lot more on your spare time through societies over there.

What kind of history is that you're interested in? Myself it's mainly middle ages to the napoleonic age. I assume you've seen TV shows such as Rome, the Tudors, the Borgias etc? And PC-games such as Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, Total War-series etc?
I got PJM Bunk Room. Which is what I wanted.

Wrong Aber, this is Aberystwyth, Wales. So I doubt anyone here's got an Aberdeen certificate.

Anybody else in Rosser? Can't wait to get gone to Aber now!

VERY dissapointed.

Wanted Rosser en-suite, on campus, at the hub of things.

Been given Alexander Halls, on the seafront, out of reach of everywhere.

Pissed off with Aber majorly.

Anybody want a swap?

What has everyone else got?

Not sure if anyone has said what I'm about to say, but I cba to read through this whole thread to find out.

I'm about to go into my 2nd year.
Back when I applied for halls I put my no. 1 choice as Penbryn, and my choices under that as others on campus. When I got my accommodation allocated I found out I was on the seafront. At first I felt similar to you but I can guarantee that I would choose exactly the same flat if I could choose again (well, maybe a floor up, the ground floor meant the bins were outside my window and drunk people would poke their heads in my window....).

I'm guessing you haven't got too much of an experience of Alex Halls so you might think they are out of the way. They are not. You are 5 minutes away from town. That means all of the shops, pubs, clubs and the sea. Sure, being on campus would be convenient, but it would also mean that you need to trek down that hill and back up pretty much every day. Tbh, the walk up the hill for lectures does good to wake you up in the morning.

The way I thought of it in my head was: would I rather live on campus and have to walk up the hill after a night out in town when I just want to crawl up in bed, OR would I rather live on the seafront and have to trek up the hill when I've got a lecture, just after waking up after a night's sleep.

You get a much better experience on the seafront. My local pub wasn't the union, it was The Glengower Hotel, with a view of the sea. Another one of my locals was Aber Vaults, which was 5 minutes away from me. If I wanted to go see the regular open mic night, I could go to Rummers. If I wanted to buy some cheese at 3am I could go to the 24hr Spar. Living on the seafront is BRILLIANT. I guarantee you will see that it's better than being on campus. Sure, campus has its benefits, but seafront outweighs it.

The only downside of Alex Halls may be if you're on one of the higher floors, it can be a bit of a trek. Plus you've got to memorise a sodding code to even get in the front door (not good when I wanted to visit my friend living there).

Definitely join the debating society! They were my favourite society last year, and a brilliant bunch of people. You'll learn to love Ollie's flamboyant arm movements in no time.

The InterPol Society are also a nice bunch of people, though I didn't see them much last year. One of my aims for this year is to go out with them more. I'll just pretend to be a Fresher....

Don't take my word as gospel, but I think that foreign students get priority for accommodation. I may be wrong though. I think I've only ever spoken about this sort of thing with overseas students whilst drunk....

I've been lucky enough to get my first choice in a Rosser en suite room.
It'd be good to talk to a few other people who are going to be there in September too

If I remember rightly Rosser halls have huge kitchens. But the only one I went in had a west facing window, so when the sun went down it would heat up like a greenhouse. Still though, HUGE kitchen.

If anyone else is on the Aber facebook group, Cwrt Mawr seems to have alot of gamers in. Gaming events look very likely!!

Are you aware of ACOG?
Aber has a very good gaming community. Though Xbox Live is rock hard to set up on the uni network and PSN is pretty much impossible. (p2p ports are blocked on the system, and PSN uses those exact ports. So unless you do some complicated setup of **** that I can't even comprehend, then you can't use it, :/.) Still, there's a Minecraft server and stuff.

Has anyone got any experiences of that? x
