okay guys...

Find the equation of the normals to the curve xy=3 which are parallel to the line
3x-y-2=0

I know the answer is 3x +- 8 (3x plus or minus 8)

I know parallel lines have the same gradient so the gradient of the normal = 3
then normal is perpendicular to the tangent so the gradient of the tangent = -1/3

I don't understand what to do know as you have no points given in the question...

So...

xy = 3
y = 3/x
dy/dx = -3/x^2

So line has a gradient of 3. Which as you said the original Must be -1/3.

-1/3 = -3/x^2

-x^2 = -9
x^2 = 9
x = ±3

Got my report toady, and get Friday off! I have to go in to see my tutor on Friday though. At my school, they make us set targets for myself, and the teacher can never think of any for me!

I'm in year 10 and am doing all the higher papers for the compulsory subjects. i took history, which for the first end of unit test i got an A* in! erm oh yeah... sociology, RS (full course) aka philosophy and ethics, biology chemistry and physics (triple.)... AS YOU CAN GUESS IT'S GOING TO BE A VERY LONG TWO YEARS. -___-

Haha yeah, tbh I think it's too much for me, 12 is the minimum in my school but I really wanted to take Psychology
