I regret not applying for the study abroad course at Bristol, I wish there were more spaces so I could transfer or something :frown:

Are there no more spaces? I've applied for the 3 year BSc (not sure if I want to do a taught or research masters yet) but when I visited they told me I could change to 4 year or year abroad any time. If not though I'm not particularly fussed - I'm spending my gap year out of the country so I still have the experience

Hey everyone, hope everyone is doing well, got all my 5 offers in! been speaking to some friends and am definitely feeling confident about firming Edinburgh over UCL for environmental geoscience, even though my Edinburgh offer is 34 IB points in comparison to UCL's 36.

I sadly haven't been able (and won't be) to visit the universities however if anyone's interested as to why I'm choosing Edinburgh (hopefully somebody is):

4 year course offers greater flexibility - I was not someone who knew they were destined for geoscience so this is helpful
Opportunity for a year abroad to UBC in Vancouver (somewhere I want to go very badly)
A module overview of Edinburgh somehow seemed more appealing (not sure if this is bias)
Whilst London is an incredible city that I could probably adjust to, somehow coming from Bahrain/Zürich Edinburgh (I've been to Scotland and London once before)

Hopefully if anybody is trawling forums somewhere in search of some advice they can stumble on this.

What do you guys think?

Hey! Well done, I think you should go with Ed, since you obviously prefer it over UCL. Have you checked the study abroad opportunities at UCL with your course, I think they have a study abroad version of your course?

But if you prefer the modules at Ed then go for that, you'd enjoy it more. It sound like you already know you want to go there, so just firm it, I don't think greet will be a great difference between what UCL and Ed will give you

Thank you
They do have a study abroad version called Earth Sciences International MSci with a similar choice of universities, but sadly I didn't really expect to go to the UK and as a result didn't research as much as I should have. I reckon I'm going to firm Edinburgh soon anyways

I thought they had a separate enviro study abroad one, I applied to UCL as well but for geology  where are you from?

It's obvious you prefer it, I had the same problem because people were telling me "it's UCL! You should firm it" but I really wasn't feeling the dept, same with two others on here, and since it's earth sciences, UCL's reputation can't trump the other unis as it's earth sciences are studied less than they're in demand.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the cold up in Scotland

From what I've gathered you apply for the Earth Sciences MSci and then once you receive your offer you can choose whether you want to specialise in environmental geoscience/geology/geophysics and so on.

Also I'm half Swiss, half russian currently on a small island called Bahrain  Hence it's a bit difficult and too expensive to go check out my unis :/

Exactly the same here, some of my friends got offers for law/biomed/psychology there and are preaching about it, so I was a bit apprehensive at first. But I agree after a while I didn't feel so enticed, even though I'm very far away the impression I've been given is that there are quite a few other universities that have bigger earth sci/geoscience departments.

I love the cold

Do you know where you might be going?

Yup, you do a major and minor sort of thing on the Earth Sciences course. It looks interesting  Oh wow, you're exotic !

I'm the only person in my college that applied to UCL, but everyone's surprised that I'm not firming UCL, if my head of year knows she'll try to persuade me otherwise.

I hate the cold!

Yup, most likely Bristol, I'm visiting next Wednesday, if I don't like it then Manchester. Where would be your insurance then?

Plus the Earth sciences degree at UCL isn't accredited

Ah yes, I forgot about that.

I'm in a good mood today, I'm transferring onto the Study Abroad course at Bristol, so once I visit next week I'm probably going to firm it

Nice one! What's it like? Can you do that without A-level maths? Because I think I remember one of the staff at your department saying yes but you take like maths catch up modules sorta thing. I found geophysics pretty cool and I would've applied for it but I don't do maths.

I think everyone who's on it right now has done maths/further maths but I don't see why not as the department and university as a whole are very good with maths catch-up sessions (and the post grads are always willing to help!). Anyway if you find that you enjoy the Geophysics module in your second semester you can ask to swap, so long as the head of that specialisation agrees that you'd be capable of managing the course

How many contact hrs do you have a week and what's your longest day?

I went on the post-offer visit day for Earth Sci at UCL, and I wasn't really that impressed to be honest. The professor who talked to us seemed very nice and stuff, but just in general I didn't like it as much as any of my other options...

UCL is amazing for lots of subjects but I think for Geology it's just lagging behind a little.

Also, in terms of accreditation, Earth Sci students can get accreditation so long as they take the modules specified for that - so the geology modules. (I think....)

Oooo Bristol? I thought you were 100% set on Manchester! What have I missed?

I know! I was! But my mum was like "remember when you were do set on going Bristol, I think you should consider it again since Manchester's employment couldn't be vastly better"

So I was like, I'll listen since she's sent two boys to uni before me lol.

I also thought I couldn't study abroad at Bristol but I emailed the woman today, so I should be transferring soon I think. The only thing bothering me is the specialisms, that's what you can do the fourth year project on, that's why I wanted to go to Manchester most, their employment in oil and gas is second only to imperial :frown: oh well, Bristol looks great. What did you do on the visit day?

Haha seems like you've changed tune then! Does Bristol have better employment than Manchester?

Manchester still has the edge, but my mum was like remember when I was basically in love with Bristol, I shouldn't let Manchester's employment trump that, etc. So although I prefer Manchester's employment, if I prefer Bristol next week, I'll let go of Manchester, since I can study abroad at Manchester now.
