What's it actually like to study at Exeter university? What is the nightlife like?

I have an offer from Exeter to study English, and whilst I loved the university when I went for the open day, I'm starting to worry a little now that I have to firm my choices.
I am just wondering what students who go there think its like, especially the nightlife. The town I come from has a very busy nightlife and I am worried that Exeter will be not as good?

Thank you

There is something to do virtually every night. I love it. It also has an advantage of Exeter city is only a 10 minute walk away from the campus, so it is very convenient.

Nightlife's fairly present, although you have to face the fact that there's only so few clubs out there if you're the clubbing type. However, there is almost always stuff to do, parties in the halls, pub raids (I can't really call them crawls) and even the odd dare to go into the King Billy for first year students. In addition, societies host their own events, so I don't think you need to be worried there.
I currently study at Exeter. The university is great! The nightlife however is a massive disappointment to me, clubs close at 2:30-3am which for me is rubbish. Other cities their clubs close at 6-7am. Just depends what your into, a lot of societies have their own nights so if your into that its great but for clubbing its crap if your into an all nighter like me.

Are the clubs far away from the campus?
Any advice on what accommodation to choose?

The clubs are a 10-15 minute walk from campus.

Don't come to Exeter expecting it to be as busy as a huge city as Leeds/London/Bristol/Newcastle. There is somewhere to go every night and it'll be guaranteed to be busy with students as everyone goes to the same places, but there's not the choice of a large city and expect to be walking home at 3am at the latest!

I however really like it, I love that you're guaranteed to see people you know every night and I love that we know exactly where to do and where will be good etc. But it does get repetitive as we end up going on the same nights each week!

There is a bit of a range but not that of a big city. you've got the normal Timepiece/Arena/Mosaic clubs in town and then Lemmy on campus (sat nights only- students do not venture into town on a sat night its for locals!), then Cellar Door for more alternative taste... then bars (Monkey Suit/Walkabout/etc)... ok there are probably places i've forgotten but there is a bit of a range for different tastes but you will find yourself going to the same places on the same nights each week - not that this is often a bad thing!

Depending on which accommodation you pick town isn't far away. Lafrowda/Exeter Halls about 10 min walk, Birks/Holland 20-25min - but anyone sane gets a taxi in winter from Birks which is about £7 for a taxi of 6 so normally max £1.50 each. you'll walk home though!

This was extremely helpful thank you! Which accommodation would you say is the most social? I really want to go to Holland Hall and was wondering if they host many events. And also how many people per floor or per flat in the halls share for catered? Do you tend to stick with the people from your own floor or does everyone in the same flat socialize together?

How much do you tend to spend on going out a week including clubbing entry, drinks, taxi etc. Is it expensive in Exeter?

It totally depends. A lot of people say Lafrowda is the most sociable but my friend is there and she thinks Birks (where I am) is better as we're much more of a little village. Lafrowda and Exeter Halls are more conveniently located for town/Lemmy though so loads of people go there for pres. Holland is great but a lot of people find it very cliquey. I almost picked Holland but last minute chose self catered, so I really liked it but its quite a love-hate hall!

Halls sometimes host events but not many people actually go in my experience apart from at the beginning of the year! I'm self catered which is different as we have our own kitchens and so socialise as a flat plus all the flats around us for pre drinks etc. Catered its more difficult as they don't have kitchens but there are social spaces that are shared between a few flats so you meet loads of people that way. Everywhere is pretty sociable, as long as you meet people in freshers around your flat you'll be find for the rest of the year. Not sure how many share catered I'm afraid..I think its about 12 but I'm not sure!

I'll answer your q about costs too as it'll range between people! Nights out are max £4 entry but some are as low as £1 if you have an Arena card. Drinks aren't cheap but they aren't ridiculous, depending on where you go weak shots can be £1, Jagerbombs tend to be between £1.80-£2.50, singles £2 and doubles £3 in TP. It does depend where you are, Arena is cheaper than TP, Lemmy is overpriced for what it is, Walkabout is cheap but nobody goes unless its original sin. EX4 is suspiciously cheap but don't go there.....
I can spend as little as £3 but have spent up to £30 when I end up buying rounds for people, never more than that though. an average night will be £10 for me.
I've lived in Exeter for over ten years on and off. The question of how good the nightlife is really depends on what you're used to. There are 3 clubs, which are all pretty terrible compared to clubs you would find in bigger cities, but there are a few bars that kind of have dancefloors and play music (i personally wouldn't class those places as clubs though) and a few good pubs. If you're from a big city then you'll be very disappointed with Exeter's nightlife, but if you're from a small town you might find it ok. Obviously if you're out with a good bunch of friends then you can have a good night anywhere and you'll end up going out a few nights a week to the same old student nights. I would personally say don't come to Exeter if nightlife is really important to you. Just my opinion.
