PhD research proposal

For those of you on working on your PhD:

What kind of preparation did you make for your research proposal? how long did it take for you to finish it?
What kind of resources did you use? (books, cds, web..?)
Did you consult any tutors/supervisors?

I'm going for an application in an IT-related discipline but any phd students can contribute..

Well, if you are applying for a PhD presumably you know what you want to research....you should find a member of staff at your university who specialises in or at least knows about the area. Ask them what they think of your ideas: is the topic viable? Too wide, too narrow? Already been done to death? You really need to talk to an expert.
